Espadanedo lies on the south bank of the Douro. Several different reasons to visit come together here: the Igreja Matriz de São Cristóvão, religious history in Saímes, a granite boundary stone near Trigais, the Poli Fest and Praia da Granja. Cultural heritage and festival traditions tell the story of the area; for swimming, however, seasonal conditions are what matter.

Churches and other historical traces

The Igreja Matriz de São Cristóvão is a medieval parish church with Romanesque and Baroque elements. It was rebuilt from 1665 and reopened for worship in 1679. The stylistic elements describe its architecture, while the dates refer to a later building phase. This gives you both an architectural and a historical perspective on the church.

A public chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Lourdes was built in Saímes in the 1890s. This was more than two centuries after the parish church reopened, marking a significantly later point in the area’s religious history. In Trigais, beside the EN222 national road, stands a granite boundary stone about 80 centimetres high. It adds a different cultural feature to the religious buildings: a small stone boundary marker. Thus, different periods and types of local history sit side by side, from the church and chapel to the boundary stone.

Festival traditions and local flavours

The Arco de Saímes tradition culminates in the construction of a huge arch in honour of Nossa Senhora de Lurdes. The Arco de Saímes is about 40 metres high and made of wood. On the Saturday of the festival, more than 100 people raise it using a tractor and steel cables. These details shed light on two aspects of the same tradition: its height describes the completed structure, while the people and equipment involved make the raising process more tangible.

The scale differs considerably: the granite boundary stone in Trigais, about 80 centimetres high, stands in contrast to the Arco de Saímes, a wooden arch around 40 metres high.

The Poli Fest celebrates local flavours. Its 2026 edition in Espadanedo lasted three days and took place on 21, 22 and 23 August. Raising the Arco is an annual tradition, while the August dates given here refer to the 2026 edition. The festivals therefore have distinct themes: the Arco centres on its dedication and construction, while the Poli Fest celebrates local flavours.

The Douro and seasonal swimming conditions

In a municipal notice dated 8 July 2025, Praia da Granja in Espadanedo was declared suitable for swimming based on the latest analyses. Swimming conditions are seasonal. Check them again before your visit. This sets the bathing area apart from the area’s historical attractions: seasonal conditions matter for swimming, while the church, chapel and boundary stone are historical landmarks.
