Castro Daire offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: the architectural history of the historic centre and the landscape of the Serra do Montemuro. Bairro do Castelo is in the historic centre, where you’ll find the Igreja Matriz and the Pelourinho. The Serra stretches across Castro Daire. Its highest point, Talegre or Talefe, is 1,381 metres high. This gives you local history and mountain scenery as two different themes for your stay.

Historic buildings and their place in time

Two buildings in Bairro do Castelo are associated with distinct historical periods. The Igreja Matriz dates back to the 17th century and replaced an earlier religious building that was also dedicated to Saint Peter. The Pelourinho in the same neighbourhood dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. So, understanding the church also involves its history as a replacement for an older religious building, while the Pelourinho has its own dating that spans two centuries.

The Capela das Carrancas was built in 1776 and is octagonal. Its precise construction date and clearly defined shape offer a different architectural point of reference alongside the dates of the Igreja Matriz and the Pelourinho. If you’re interested in architectural history, you can look at both the dates and the different building forms.

Casa da Cerca and the Municipal Museum

Casa da Cerca also dates from 1776: it was built as the former residence of the Bishop of Lamego, D. Manuel de Vasconcelos. The Museu Municipal de Castro Daire is located in the town centre, in Casa da Cerca, an 18th-century Baroque building. Together with the Capela das Carrancas, it provides a direct comparison between two buildings from the same year: an octagonal chapel and a former residence. The museum adds another cultural dimension to the history of the residence.

The landscape of the Serra do Montemuro

The Serra do Montemuro stretches across Castro Daire. Its highest point is known as Talegre or Talefe and is 1,381 metres high. Portas do Montemuro is an especially good viewpoint for taking in the features and landscape of the Serra. The mountain range also has a distinct designation: it is part of the first phase of Portugal’s national list of Natura 2000 sites. Its elevation, viewpoint and listing each shed light on a different aspect of the mountain landscape.

Information about the area and walking trails

The Centro de Interpretação e Informação Montemuro e Paiva gives visitors an introduction to the area through texts and an interactive application. It displays archaeological finds and explains the main phases of human settlement. It also presents the network of walking trails in the municipality of Castro Daire. The centre therefore combines an introduction to settlement history with information about the trail network, while Portas do Montemuro offers views of the Serra’s features and landscape.

When looking for a hotel in Castro Daire, you can start by choosing your focus: architectural history, landscape or both. The churches, Casa da Cerca with the municipal museum, the interpretation centre and the viewpoint offer different themes to explore.
