The Serra do Montemuro also extends across Castro Daire; the Douro lies north of the mountain range, and the Rio Paiva to the south. Hiking trails, riverside landscapes and historic sites offer different focuses for a stay. If you want to combine nature and cultural heritage, you can choose between shorter circular routes and longer trails, discovering landscapes ranging from river valleys to viewpoints in the mountains.
Montemuro and Paiva: Discover the Landscapes
Portas do Montemuro is a geomorphological viewpoint at an elevation of about 1,213 metres. From there, you can look out over the landscape of the Serra do Montemuro and the tectonic valley of the Rio Bestança. Penedo da Saudade also offers panoramic views of the southern slope of the Serra and the Paiva Valley. An iron staircase leads to the viewpoint; check access conditions before visiting. The terrain at waterfalls can be dangerous. Cascata da Pombeira is a geosite with several waterfalls on the Rio Pombeiro above the granite massif of Montemuro. Potholes and other forms of river erosion are also part of this landscape.
The Rio Paiva is a typical mountain river and part of the Natura 2000 network. Its lush riverside vegetation serves, among other things, as a spawning habitat for trout. Animals living in the river include otters, water moles, water lizards, Iberian frogs and Lusitanian salamanders; there are also about 14 fish species. In the Serra do Montemuro, peat bogs and well-preserved stands of Pyrenean oak are also part of the protected natural area. Together with the Serra da Freita and Serra da Arada, the Serra forms an important protected area for the wolf population.
Foz Cabril lies at the confluence of the Rio Tenente and Rio Paiva and is designated as a recreation and leisure area with particular value for observing nature. Rafting is described as the main river activity in Castro Daire; one of the most significant stretches of white water is on the Rio Paiva. If you plan to go rafting, check current providers as well as the weather and water conditions beforehand.
Circular Trails and Longer Routes
The PR1 Trilho dos Moinhos is an easily accessible 6.8-kilometre circular hiking trail, and the PR2 Percurso das Minas is an easily accessible 7-kilometre circular trail. The routes differ in length by only 200 metres; check local conditions before setting out on either hike. Do not enter mine openings along the PR2 without up-to-date safety information. A much longer option is the section of the Caminho Português Interior de Santiago in the Município de Castro Daire: it is about 40 kilometres long and begins at Ribeira de Cabrum. The route passes through forest, agricultural and rural areas, by two chapels dedicated to Saint James, and through the Natura 2000 area of the Rio Paiva. Check trail markers and conditions before a pilgrimage.
The GR52 Grande Rota da Transumância begins at Cruz do Rossão in the Serra do Montemuro. It follows rural roads and mountain sections through several villages as well as valleys, rivers and streams in the Castro Daire area. The route is described as open year-round; take particular care in the mountains in winter. Alongside the shorter circular trails, there are therefore routes with different lengths and landscape character to choose from.
Churches, Museum and Local Traditions
The Igreja Matriz de Castro Daire is classified as a property of public interest. Baroque and Rococo styles dominate the Igreja Matriz in Bairro do Castelo. Its origins go back a long way; according to one tradition, it was rebuilt during the reign of D. Dinis using stones from the former castle. The Pelourinho, dating from the 17th or 18th century, also stands in Bairro do Castelo. The old settlement wall is attributed to an Iron Age castro, from which the Vila de Castro Daire is said to have developed.
The Museu Municipal de Castro Daire is housed in Casa da Cerca, an 18th-century Baroque building in the town centre. Its collection includes agricultural tools, archaeology, traditional arts and traditional typography. The Centro de Interpretação e Informação do Montemuro e Paiva is housed in the former Solar dos Mendonças. An interactive application presents information there about the biodiversity of the Rio Paiva and people’s relationship with the river. In addition, the Rota da Água e da Pedra comprises 18 designated visitor panels: nine along the Montemuro route and nine along the Paiva route.
Events also reflect local ways of life. A Última Rota da Transumância takes place annually over several days, recreating pastoral life and the tradition of transhumance through various activities. Dates and programme may vary from one edition to the next. FICA Castro Daire, also known as Festa das Colheitas, is a harvest festival focused on local agriculture, including the breeding of Arouquesa cattle. The programme includes a parade of decorated ox carts through the streets of the Vila de Castro Daire; check the dates for the relevant edition.
