Mourilhe can be explored through tangible traces of its architectural and local history: a former manor house dating from the 18th century, a sculpted wayside cross and accounts of two fires in the 19th century. These themes give the village a distinct cultural and historical focus and help organise the different aspects of a trip to Mourilhe.
Solar do Outão and the Chapel
At one end of Mourilhe stands the former Solar do Outão. The building dates from the 18th century; today it houses the Hotel Rural Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. It has a private chapel, founded in 1761. The date falls in the same century as the construction of the manor house, placing the chapel more precisely in time. An old pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela may have passed by the manor house; the chapel is associated with this route. The building thus brings together architectural history, a precisely dated religious connection and a possible association with a pilgrim route.
The Cruzeiro and Religious Art
The Cruzeiro em Mourilhe is a wayside cross with sculpted figures on both sides of the Latin cross. One side shows Christ on the cross; opposite is the praying Virgin Mary, supported by an angel. The focus differs from that of the manor house: there, the picture is shaped by architectural history and the possible connection to a pilgrim route; at the Cruzeiro, by the figures on its two sides. Calvário de Mourilhe is also among the village’s religious sites.
Church History and Local Accounts
Two fires are important to the village’s history, but their consequences were different. On 4 April 1854, the church was destroyed and rebuilt through a public collection. In the second fire, on 4 July 1875, only four houses and the church survived in Mourilhe. The second fire came 21 years later: in 1854, the focus is on the church’s restoration; in 1875, on the number of buildings that survived.
The spring by the church in Mourilhe was associated with São Brás; according to local tradition, it was believed to have healing properties for throat ailments. This attributed healing effect is part of religious tradition and is not a medical claim.
Castro de Mourilhe and Getting There
Castro de Mourilhe lies southwest of Mourilhe, above the Ribeira da Pedreira. It adds an archaeological dimension to the religious and architectural sites. The information about its direction and elevation helps distinguish it as a point of interest in its own right, alongside the buildings in the village.
An older version of the municipal transport network listed Route 11 as a connection between Parada and Montalegre that passed through Mourilhe. Use this information as a guide to the former route and check a current timetable before travelling.
Choosing Accommodation with a Cultural Focus
When looking for a holiday rental in Mourilhe, you can start by choosing the village for its cultural appeal. Consider whether architectural history, religious art and local traditions suit your trip. Then compare the details of the individual accommodations with your own preferences. This keeps the choice of destination separate from the selection of a particular holiday rental.
