At Montalegre Castle, the history of a fortress built on rock meets the ethnographic perspective of the Ecomuseu de Barroso. The area also offers a mountain route with 19 stages, well-preserved village architecture and an annual event celebrating regional products.
Montalegre Castle and Ecomuseu
Montalegre Castle stands on a large rock. It was built in the 13th century over the remains of an earlier fortification; archaeological finds attest to its military importance over the centuries. The site thus brings together several periods: an earlier fortification, the construction of the castle and the long military role evidenced by the finds.
The headquarters of the Ecomuseu de Barroso is located near the castle. The Espaço Padre Fontes presents dozens of documentaries on local ethnography and a three-dimensional model showing more than a thousand points of interest. The centre also has an educational garden for visitors. A range of local products is available in the shop. Those interested in the areaâs cultural heritage can explore it in different ways here: through films, a model of local attractions and regional products.
Road Route and Mountain Hike: Two Different Ways to Explore
The EN 103 is a 274-kilometre route that runs from Neiva to Bragança through Montalegre. For a different kind of walk, there is the GR 50 â Grande Rota Peneda-GerĂȘs: around 190 kilometres long, it has 19 stages, passes through Montalegre and ends in TourĂ©m. These two routes offer different ways of travelling: a road route with named endpoints and a multi-stage mountain trail.
Mountain Scenery and Villages
Montalegre lies within the landscape of Parque Nacional da Peneda-GerĂȘs. In PitĂ”es das JĂșnias, the character of a mountain village has been preserved between the Mourela plateau and the rugged heights of GerĂȘs. Traditions of farming and livestock raising continue there. Trails lead towards the mountains; places to visit include Mosteiro de Santa Maria das JĂșnias and the well-known waterfall. Visitors also come to the village to eat.
Portela de PitĂ”es marks the boundary between Parque Nacional da Peneda-GerĂȘs in Portugal and Parque Natural da Baixa Limia-Serra do XurĂ©s in Galicia, Spain. From there, views stretch across the plateau and towards some of the peaks of the GerĂȘs range; visibility depends on the weather. In PincĂŁes, well-preserved granaries, mills, cattle sheds, farm tracks and an oil mill offer a glimpse of the traditional architecture and working life of the mountain region. Cascata de PincĂŁes plunges around 20 metres into a small lagoon with translucent water.
Crafts, Museums and Regional Themes
The Ecomuseu in Paredes do Rio includes a hydraulic installation more than two hundred years old, combining the functions of a mill, a dynamo, a sawmill and a fulling mill. The restored pisão is used and maintained by the local community; a village representative opens it to visitors. In Tourém, the former Casa do Boi do Povo has been converted into an outpost of the Ecomuseu de Barroso. Its displays focus on smuggling, Couto Misto, political exiles and cross-border relations. These themes offer a different perspective from the fortress or mountain trails, focusing instead on crafts, village life and the history of the border.
Barroso is important for understanding the region as a whole: its landscape is shaped by livestock farming, especially cattle raising, as well as typical mountain crops such as potatoes and rye. Its traditional landscape combines old pastures and cultivated land with scrubland and forests.
Festivals and Reasons to Visit
Montalegre hosts the Feira do Fumeiro every January. Local sausages and smoked hams are on offer, and the festival also celebrates tradition, inherited craftsmanship and the quality of local products. Dates may vary, so check the event schedule if you plan your trip around it.
At Sexta 13, a theatrical performance takes place in the castle and historic centre of Montalegre. Check the dates for this performance before making plans. The annual Festa da Ponte da Misarela reenacts legendary, fantastic and historical elements associated with the bridge and its surroundings. The region thus offers different reasons to visit, whether your interests lie in culture, scenery or a particular event.
