In the centre of Vila Nova De Famalicão, the Festas Antoninas begin in the first week of June and continue until 13 June, the feast day of Saint Anthony. This annual public celebration brings together religious and secular rituals. The local culture is expressed not only in collections and exhibitions, but also in a recurring shared festival tradition.

Festivals, Literature and Art

A literary trail leads to São Miguel de Seide and the Casa-Museu of Camilo Castelo Branco. The writer lived there for a period in the 1860s and died in the house on 1 June 1890. The connection between place and biography gives the visit a specific historical focus: it is not just a writer’s name, but a particular period of his life that takes centre stage.

The Fundação Cupertino de Miranda offers another way to explore art. Its collection of Surrealist works includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and collages, as well as cadavres exquis and other objects. Visitors interested in different artistic forms can discover the breadth of a collection here, from traditional pictures to collaborative or experimental formats.

Industry and History in the Museums

At the Museu da Indústria Têxtil da Bacia do Ave, regional textile history can be traced through machinery, tools and objects from former textile factories. The museum was founded in 1987. The three stages of production illustrated by the textile machinery are particularly vivid: spinning, weaving and finishing. They give the collection a clear thematic sequence—from thread to fabric to the final treatment.

The Museu Nacional Ferroviário – Núcleo de Lousado also focuses on technology and labour. It displays railway equipment manufactured in six countries between 1875 and 1965. The collection includes turntables, level crossings and equipment from blacksmith’s workshops, carpentry shops and sawmills. The museum helps visitors understand both the Industrial Revolution and the historical role of rail transport in Portugal. The range of equipment on display makes clear that railway history encompasses more than just vehicles.

The Museu do Automóvel de Vila Nova De Famalicão has 3,000 square metres of exhibition space. It displays around 150 historic cars, motorcycles and bicycles. The approximate number and variety of vehicle types give an idea of the collection’s breadth without reducing it to a single category.

Ceramics take centre stage at the Museu de Cerâmica Artística da Fundação Castro Alves. Its permanent collections of pottery and ceramic sculpture comprise a total of 1,300 objects displayed across three rooms. They also tell the story of the foundation’s ceramics department, linking individual objects with an institutional history.

The Museu Bernardino Machado focuses on political history: its permanent exhibition covers the end of constitutional monarchy, the First Republic, the Estado Novo and resistance to Salazar’s dictatorship. Thematic rooms present Bernardino Machado from four perspectives—as a person, educator, scientist and politician. The Museu da Guerra Colonial offers another historical perspective. It traces the Portuguese soldier’s experience in the Colonial War from 1961 to 1974 and is organised by theme; its educational content provides historical and cultural information for the general public.

Green Space and Walking Route

Parque da Devesa adds a natural dimension. This 27-hectare urban green space lies near the city centre, and the River Pelhe runs through the park along its entire length. Visitors can use a free audio guide on a tablet or smartphone. If you plan to use it, check the current availability of this digital service in advance.

A separate way to explore the surrounding area on foot is a 15-kilometre circular route open to the public between the localities of Gondifelos and Gemunde. The route therefore has a clearly defined length and two named endpoints. It can be considered a separate excursion from the green space near the city; the two offerings are not necessarily connected.

Planning Information

The Posto de Turismo de Famalicão is located in the central area of Praça-Mercado Municipal. Visitors can get information there about the culture, heritage and gastronomy of Vila Nova De Famalicão. Check the current opening hours and procedures before visiting. Advance reservations at least 15 days ahead are required for municipal industrial tourism offerings; check the booking arrangements in good time if you are planning such an activity.

You can tailor your visit to your interests: the Festas Antoninas feature religious and secular rituals, while the museums offer different perspectives on literature, art, industry and political history. Parque da Devesa complements these cultural topics with an urban green space; the 15-kilometre circular route is a separate option for anyone considering a longer walk.
