Porto offers several clearly distinct highlights for a discovery trip: a medieval cityscape, buildings and museums, as well as coastal destinations and routes in the wider region. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first whether culture and architecture, beach activities or nature trails will shape your trip. You can then prioritize each destination according to your own travel plans.
UNESCO Heritage, Architecture and Museums
Porto’s historic centre has largely preserved its medieval street plan and urban structure. An outstanding cityscape, it has a history stretching back 2,000 years. The Luís I Bridge and the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. This monastery in Vila Nova de Gaia was once used as a fortress and offers views over Porto.
Individual buildings offer different points of interest, too: the Torre dos Clérigos is a Baroque building from the first half of the 18th century. After climbing 240 steps, you can enjoy panoramic views over Porto and the Douro. Casa da Música offers guided tours of the building designed by Rem Koolhaas. Historical architecture and a contemporary building thus provide different ways to experience the city.
Art and architecture can also be explored at the Serralves buildings. The Museum of Contemporary Art presents exhibitions by leading Portuguese and international artists. Serralves Villa is considered a unique example of the Art Deco style. The 18-hectare park includes formal gardens, woodland, a traditional farm and a treetop walk. The museum, villa and park each offer a distinct focus, from exhibitions and architecture to garden and woodland landscapes.
In Amarante, the Museu de Arte Moderna Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso focuses on modern and contemporary Portuguese art, particularly painting and sculpture. In Penafiel, the Castro de Monte Mozinho and the Moinho da Ponte de Novelas museum centre are part of the Museu Municipal. The Castro is a musealized archaeological site with a recommended walking route, information panels and an interpretation centre. Advance booking is required for group tours of both sites.
Coast, Craft and Activities
Praia de Matosinhos offers conditions for surfing, bodyboarding and kitesurfing. A seafront promenade runs along the beach and is used, among other things, for cycling. There are several restaurants nearby serving fish and seafood. Those planning a trip around the beach and outdoor activities will find different points of interest here than visitors focusing on architecture and museums.
The beach at Vila do Conde stretches for about six kilometres to the mouth of the Rio Ave. Praia Azul is especially popular with surfers. Vila do Conde is also known for its bobbin lace tradition, practised with skill and patience by the women of the region. The coastal landscape and local craft thus offer two distinct aspects of this destination.
Routes and Other Regional Interests
In Amarante, the Caminho de Torres passes the Ponte de São Gonçalo. A signposted section of the Itinerário de Torres there is 28 kilometres long. For nature and hiking, the Passadiços do Paiva offer a different focus: the access points are in Areinho and Espiunca; a transfer service connects the two ends for visitors who wish to walk the route in one direction only. The route passes through five geosites in the Arouca Geopark: Garganta do Paiva, Cascata das Aguieiras, Vau, Gola do Salto and Falha da Espiunca. The Paiva River and its tributaries also offer opportunities for rafting, canoeing and canyoning in the area around the Passadiços.
The Rota do Vinho do Porto is another option to consider when planning your trip. It includes winery visits, tastings and wine tourism experiences. You can travel the route by car, train or boat; a boat trip runs from the Gaia quay to Régua. Alongside culture, the coast and walking routes, wine and wine tourism are therefore also available as distinct interests.
Choose your accommodation based on the experiences you actually want to include in your stay.
