Vila do Conde combines a protected coastal landscape with themes such as seafaring, crafts and local history. These highlights can be clearly distinguished when planning your trip: nature activities explore dune flora and bird identification, while museums and maritime institutions focus on local traditions and collective memory. The scale also varies—from individual activities to the Grande Rota do Património, with 18 stages.

Coastal Landscape, Dunes and Routes

The Paisagem Protegida Regional do Litoral de Vila do Conde e Reserva Ornitológica de Mindelo stretches for 8.5 kilometres, from the mouth of the Ave to the mouth of the Onda. These two endpoints provide a clear framework for this protected area. The boardwalks along the Ecovia do Litoral Sul are also among the attractions for visitors and local residents. As trail conditions and access may change, check them before your visit.

The CMIA activity “Pé fora da duna” takes participants through the dune area. They learn to characterise the dunes and identify dune flora species, as well as understand their importance and adaptations. “Vem conhecer as aves” has a different focus: the activity teaches bird identification skills or provides an opportunity to practise them. Thus, one activity centres on dunes and plants, while the other focuses on identifying birds.

The Grande Rota do Património de Vila do Conde offers a broader geographical perspective. It is more than 300 kilometres long, comprises 18 stages and crosses the entire municipality. The starting and finishing point is Cais da Alfândega, beside the Nau. Its scale and stage structure clearly distinguish this route from a single nature activity. If you include it in your plans, bear in mind that programme details may change.

Maritime Heritage and Local History

The Nau Quinhentista is a replica of a 16th-century Portuguese nau. It represents Vila do Conde’s maritime tradition and the city’s connection to Portuguese maritime expansion. At the Centro de Artes Náuticas (CdAN), maritime heritage is preserved and the tradition kept alive; its approach encourages interaction and hands-on exploration. Together, these offer both a tangible example of seafaring history and an opportunity to engage with maritime heritage.

The Centro de Memória houses the municipal archive, the archaeology office and the central museum area of the Museu de Vila do Conde. It offers a place to explore the history of the city and municipality, as well as collective memory. Opening hours may change; check them before your arrival.

Bobbin Lace and Local Festivals

At the Museu das Rendas de Bilros, visitors can watch lacemakers at work and observe the bobbin lace-making process; demonstrations may depend on museum operations. The museum also displays the world’s largest piece of bobbin lace, certified by Guinness World Records since 2015. A school teaches the craft. Exhibitions and school activities may change. Along with Peniche, Vila do Conde is one of the two leading reference centres for bobbin lace-making. Comparing the two towns places the craft in context beyond the collection of a single museum.

The Senhor dos Navegantes festival is also part of the local events calendar: it takes place every year in Caxinas and Poça da Barca. The highlight is a procession in honour of local fishermen. Dates and programmes vary each year. Vila do Conde has also hosted Curtas de Vila do Conde, a short film festival, since 1993; the programme and dates change with each edition. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these events, check the dates in advance.
