Labruge can be explored through distinctive themes: the coast, the history surrounding Castro de São Paio and religious buildings. At Praia de Labruge, dunes and rocks shape the sandy beach. The descriptions of the PR3 Castro de S. Paio and the Portuguese Coastal Way also lead to different points of reference. When planning, it is worth distinguishing their respective routes and features.
Beach and Coastal Landscape
Praia de Labruge is bordered by a dune system, and scattered rocks lie on its sandy beach. Sand, dunes and individual rocks provide concrete clues to the character of the beach. The Rio Onda forms the boundary between Labruge and Lavra and flows into the sea at Labruge beach. A bridge connects Praia de Angeiras with Labruge. Praia dos Castros is also a named coastal location: the name refers to a small beach between two rocky elevations. The Centro Interpretativo Castro de S. Paio is in Moreiró, Labruge, next to Praia dos Castros. When planning, these names can be used as distinct points of reference for the beach, river mouth and interpretation centre.
Two Routes by the Sea
The PR3 Castro de S. Paio route runs along the sea within the protected regional coastal landscape of Vila do Conde and the Mindelo Ornithological Reserve. The coastal route and the two protected areas are defining features of this route. The Portuguese Coastal Way follows a different route as described: coming from the D. Goimil bridge, it passes through Aveleda in Vila do Conde and heads north towards the Igreja de Santiago de Labruge, staying relatively close to the beach. On the pilgrimage route, Aveleda, the direction towards the church and the proximity to the beach provide points of reference. You can therefore consider the routes in terms of their respective landscape and directional features rather than combining them into a single route.
Castro, Rock Engravings and Churches
Several types of rock engravings were found in the rocks at São Paio, associated with the settlement of Castro de São Paio. The Capela de São Paio was built near the Castro in 1885. The Igreja de Santiago de Labruge offers another historical reference: it is a typical building from the second half of the 18th century. This makes it possible to distinguish two religious buildings by their dates; the rock engravings, in turn, represent a separate way of exploring local history, connected with the settlement of the Castro. The specific details lead from archaeological traces to a chapel and then to a church building, without treating these distinct subjects as one and the same.
Accommodation for Pilgrims
The Albergue de S. Tiago is a pilgrims’ hostel for the Portuguese Coastal Way starting from Porto and is located in Labruge’s former primary school. The hostel opened in 2015. If you include this accommodation in your overnight plans, check its current availability in advance.
