Sendim offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the Roman villa, historic buildings, and a landscape of rivers and hills. You can get to know the place through its archaeology and architecture, or through its landscape. When planning your trip, a local festival date is also important if you want to schedule your stay around it.

Roman Villa and Historic Buildings

The Villa Romana de Sendim is located on a small promontory at the foot of Monte do Crasto. Since 31 December 1997, it has been classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico (Property of Public Interest). Restored archaeological finds from the villa are exhibited at the associated Centro Interpretativo. The centre opened to the public in 2003. This offers two different ways to explore the Roman past: the villa as an archaeological site and the Centro as a place to see restored finds on display. If you plan to visit the Centro, check its current opening hours in advance.

The buildings also span different periods. Solar de Sergude is a manor house characteristic of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, preserving remains of Early Gothic architecture from the 13th and 14th centuries. It was the residence of the first Lords of Felgueiras; in addition to its architecture, this place is associated with a specific history of lordship. Casa da Cabeça de Porca dates from the 18th century and has a courtyard well and a chapel. The parish church of Sendim was built in the 16th century at the behest of the University of Coimbra. In chronological terms, the Early Gothic remains are the oldest, while the Casa represents the most recent of the three building periods mentioned; the church adds a glimpse of the 16th century. If you are interested in architectural history, you can distinguish the periods and building types rather than attributing all the historic buildings to a single era.

Landscape and Routes

The Vale de Sendim lies between the hills of Calvário and Crasto and the wooded Monte de Santa Quitéria. The Bugio River flows through Sendim towards Jugueiros, where it joins the Vizela River. This brings two different landscape scales into view: the valley’s position between the hills and the course of a river leading to its confluence. The Rota dos Moinhos begins in the area of Alto de Sergude and Alto do Crasto in Sendim. Its named starting area gives the route a specific connection to the local landscape.

Another perspective on activities in Sendim is a historical one: the Sendim downhill course hosted a stage of the Minho BTT DHI Championship. While the Rota dos Moinhos is identified by its starting area, the downhill course is associated with a past sporting competition.
