Perafita offers several ways to enjoy a stay on the coast: open stretches of sand and dunes, opportunities to learn about nature, and traces of different historical periods. Praia do Marreco and Praia da Memória each have their own distinctive landscapes. Archaeological traces from Montedouro and Pampelido add to the coastal themes; an obelisk at Praia da Memória commemorates an event from the 19th century. This means you can discover Perafita not only through its beaches, but also through its natural and cultural history.

Beaches and Coastal Nature

Praia do Marreco lies near the village of Perafita. Its broad sandy beach is on a stretch of coast where the shoreline forms a kind of bay. Praia da Memória presents a different landscape: its open expanse of sand is surrounded by dunes and a few rocks. When choosing between these two beach settings, you can focus on their specific features: at Marreco, the bay-like shape of the coast defines the scene, while at Praia da Memória, the open sand, dunes and individual rocks stand out.

The coastal landscape also includes Parque de Dunas da Praia da Memória. It is dedicated to promoting and interpreting the coast’s natural heritage and offers interpretive visits focused on observing fauna and flora. This places coastal nature alongside views of the beach landscape. The visits focus on animal and plant life, giving natural heritage its own place alongside Perafita’s historical attractions.

History at Praia da Memória

The name Praia da Memória came into use after a commemorative obelisk was erected at the site where liberal troops under D. Pedro IV landed in 1832. The landing took place on 8 July at a beach near Arnosa do Pampelido, between Perafita and Lavra. Praia da Memória was formerly known as Arenosa or Ladrões Beach. The obelisk commemorates this historical event and also shapes the beach’s history of its name.

The monument is made of granite. Two metal crowns sit at its top, and four limestone plaques at its base. Its construction history is also part of the historical picture: the cornerstone was laid on 1 December 1840, and the obelisk was completed 24 years later. Those interested in history will find both the connection to the 1832 landing and a monument whose design and construction period are described in detail.

Archaeological Traces in Montedouro and Pampelido

The Necrópole Medieval de Montedouro in Pampelido, Perafita, represents a much earlier period. It consists of five non-anthropomorphic graves carved into granite rock, dated to the High Middle Ages, from the 7th to the 11th century. One grave is located on the crest of a hill in Montedouro; it is oval and has a rim. The number, material and shape give the site several specific features, in addition to its historical dating.

Handmade pottery dating from the 2nd millennium BC Bronze Age has also been found in the Montedouro area. It indicates that settlement in the area dates back to prehistory. The pottery finds and the medieval graves represent different historical periods: prehistoric traces of settlement on the one hand, and a High Medieval burial site on the other. Together with the obelisk at Praia da Memória, they create a multifaceted picture of Perafita’s history.
