The Igreja de São Pedro do Mosteiro de Cete combines monastic architecture with a remarkable detail: the church contains a funerary chapel of D. Gonçalo Oveques, richly decorated with Hispano-Moorish polychrome tiles. A cloister connects the former monastery buildings to the church. This is a particularly tangible place to discover Paredes’ cultural diversity.
Beyond the churches, history, art and landscape also shape the character of the area. Medieval ensembles, public art and striking quartzite formations offer different ways to explore Paredes, from art-historical details to geological connections.
Monasteries, Churches and Public Art
The Igreja de São Pedro do Mosteiro de Cete has been classified as a Monumento Nacional since 1910 and is part of the Rota do Românico. In Vilela, the Igreja de Santo Estêvão and the Mosteiro de Vilela form a medieval monastic ensemble. It was extensively remodelled in the modern era and is now classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público.
The Igreja de SĂŁo CristĂłvĂŁo de Louredo tells a different architectural story: its present form dates from the 18th century. The church is also classified as a Monumento de Interesse PĂşblico. Its richly ornamented altarpieces are known for the high quality of their carving and are associated with the Barroco de Estilo Nacional. This stylistic designation helps place the decorative features within a specific art-historical tradition.
The Circuito Aberto de Arte PĂşblica turns Paredes into an open-air museum of contemporary art, closely connected to the local community and architectural heritage. It includes 18 works by national and international artists, as well as nine additional temporary installations. Both permanent artworks and temporary installations are therefore part of the project. In the town centre, the Pelourinho de Paredes provides a historical point of reference; it was already mentioned in 1758 alongside the former courthouse and prison.
The Palacete da Granja stands out for its Brazilian-influenced architectural features: a balustrade on the triangular pediment and yellow-and-white façade tiles in high relief from the Massarelos factory. The local craft tradition also includes old woodworking techniques passed down from generation to generation. Together, these show how architecture and craftsmanship represent different facets of cultural heritage.
The NĂşcleo MuseolĂłgico Padre Amadeu Soares da Silva is housed in an outbuilding and comprises three rooms containing the historical collection of the parish of Louredo: the room of the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, the sacristy and the Passion room. Its thematic layout makes the different parts of the collection easy to distinguish.
Quartzite Landscapes and Trails
Paredes is shaped by landscape contrasts resulting from geomorphological processes and human activity. At the CanhĂŁo da Senhora do Salto, the Rio Sousa cuts through quartzite rock. Its hardness and resistance to erosion have shaped a very narrow, deep valley with steep sides. Here, the landscape can be understood not just as a backdrop, but also through the forces that formed it.
The CISS – Centro de Interpretação da Senhora do Salto is located within the Natura 2000 Site de Valongo, which is designated as a Zona Especial de Conservação. The centre’s interactive displays help visitors learn about the past and interpret the Senhora do Salto site as it is today. Another viewpoint is located at the Torre do Castelo de Aguiar de Sousa, where visitors can see quartzite cliffs, the Levadas waterfalls and the confluence of the Rio Sousa on its way towards the Douro.
The trails also offer a range of perspectives. The Trilho dos Chocolateiros passes through a tradition from Sobrosa: in the afternoon, coffee was served with broa in a ceramic vessel called a “chocolateira”. The name of the vessel refers to a distinctive everyday custom. For a shorter circular walk, the Trilho dos Moinhos (PR1) is a short, 5.2-kilometre loop.
Green Spaces, Sport and Visitor Information
The Parque da Cidade de Paredes covers approximately 2.5 hectares and offers a place to relax and connect with nature. The park includes areas for recreational exercise and play areas for children. A skate park is also integrated into the green space for skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX freestyle riders. Its ramps, rails and walls are designed for both beginners and experienced participants in these sports.
There are facilities for a variety of other sporting interests. The Kartódromo de Baltar has a 1,203-metre karting track, as well as a separate track for rallycross and one for kartcross. The Campo de Golfe do Aqueduto offers a varied and challenging nine-hole course with par 3 and two differently configured teeing areas. The wider Rota do Românico travel offer includes mountain-bike tours lasting a morning, a full day or two days, with route options ranging from 20 to 75 kilometres.
The CIMOCB – Centro de Interpretação das Minas de Ouro de Castromil e Banjas is dedicated to Paredes’ geological, archaeological and cultural mining heritage. It also serves as a visitor reception point and the starting point for visits to the Castromil gold mines. The Rota do Românico information centres in Paredes welcome and assist visitors and tourists.
Paredes can be reached via the A4, A41, A42 and A43 motorways. From Porto, the Linha do Douro runs to Paredes and can be accessed from SĂŁo Bento or CampanhĂŁ stations. This allows travellers to plan their journey using different transport options, while local discoveries range from churches and art to landscapes and sport.
