The Citânia de Sanfins covers more than 15 hectares and is one of the most important archaeological sites of the pre-Roman Castro culture on the Iberian Peninsula. It lies in a strategically significant location of outstanding scenic value. Its size, historical context and landscape offer three distinctive perspectives on the same place.

Archaeology and Romanesque Architecture

Finds recovered during excavations at the Citânia can be seen at the Museu Arqueológico da Citânia in the centre of the municipality of Sanfins. Another glimpse into history can be found at the Castro-period bathhouse at the foot of the settlement: in the past, it was used for sauna-like steam baths and cold-water baths. The finds and the surviving bathing practices offer different ways of exploring the site’s archaeological history.

The church of the Mosteiro de São Pedro de Ferreira reflects a different era. It is one of the most important examples of Portuguese Romanesque architecture. Its sculpture brings together motifs from the geographical regions and stone-carving workshops of Zamora–Compostela, Coimbra–Porto and Braga–Unhão. One of the capitals in the main chapel depicts minstrels. In this way, a wide-ranging visual language is combined with a specific figurative motif.

Furniture Culture and Local Cuisine

Paços de Ferreira is known as the “Capital do Móvel” because of its furniture industry. The Museu Municipal do Móvel preserves the municipality’s collective memory and serves to research and share its local heritage. It focuses particularly on crafts and arts, whose most significant expression is the furniture industry. Here, furniture is presented both as a defining industry and in the context of local craft and art.

Capão de Freamunde is also closely associated with the area’s culinary character: it is the only Portuguese poultry product with a protected geographical indication (PGI). The annual Semana Gastronómica involves restaurants from across the municipality that join the initiative and feature the culinary speciality of the occasion on their menus. Highlights include the gastronomic competition and gala dinner for Capão à Freamunde on 12 December. If you plan to include the event in your trip, check the dates for that year’s edition.

Green Spaces and Views

The Parque Urbano de Paços de Ferreira has an extensive walking loop and a picnic area, offering two different ways to enjoy the space: walking and taking a break outdoors. The Parque de Lazer de Freamunde offers a relaxing experience in close contact with nature, and a river runs through the park. On clear days, the sea can be seen from the Miradouro do Monte do Pilar. Weather conditions are part of the experience at this viewpoint: the sea view is described as being visible on clear days.

Cultural Places in the Municipality

Alongside its archaeological sites and buildings, cultural institutions add further highlights to the area. The Biblioteca Municipal Prof. Vieira Dinis is one of the most important places for cultural engagement in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira. The Casa da Cultura de Freamunde opened to the public in 1997 and serves as a place for reading and other activities in the centre of Freamunde. A column bearing a national coat of arms stands in Praça 25 de Abril, in front of the town hall—a striking feature of the public space.
