At the Mosteiro do Salvador de Paço de Sousa, several building phases can be distinguished chronologically: the monastery was founded in the 10th century by Trutesendo Galindes and his wife Anímia; the church was built in the 13th century on the same site as a predecessor temple from the 12th century.

Church and Building History

Inside the church is the tomb of Egas Moniz de Ribadouro, tutor to King D. Afonso Henriques. It consists of two tomb chests: one dates from the late 12th century, the other from the 13th century. The two dates make the tomb’s chronological span tangible. Long friezes can be found inside and outside the church, alongside plant ornamentation with bevel-carved forms. Paço de Sousa is also associated with the development of a “nationalised Romanesque.” This development drew on pre-Romanesque traditions and was influenced by themes from the Romanesque styles of Coimbra and Porto.

Other Monuments and Landscape

The Casa e Quinta da Companhia is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. Since the 16th century, its history has been closely linked to that of the Mosteiro de São Salvador de Paço de Sousa. The grounds include gardens, a woodland with several centuries-old trees, and some leisure areas, including the Fonte dos Frades. The chapel of the Casa e Quinta has preserved the simple Mannerist design from the time it was built. This brings the estate’s design and landscape into view alongside its historical connections.

The Memorial da Ermida is classified as a National Monument; this designation was made under the decree of 16 June 1910. It belongs to a category of monuments of which only six examples survive in Portugal. The category is associated, among other things, with the erection of tombs, commemorating a person, and the passage of funeral processions; its function has not yet been fully established. This makes it possible to distinguish the monument’s status from the cautious interpretation of its function.
