Romanesque architecture and regional building traditions

Vila Boa de Quires offers several cultural and historical perspectives: the Igreja de Santo André combines Romanesque architectural history with a regional context, while the Obras do Fidalgo stands out for its Baroque façade. The Castro de Quires and the Trilhos de Portocarreiro – PR8 trail add archaeology and landscape to these themes.

The Igreja de Santo André de Vila Boa de Quires was built in the second quarter of the 13th century as part of a monastic complex. It is considered one of the clearest examples of so-called Românico Nacionalizado. The term refers to a late, unified focus on Romanesque construction in the inland part of the Porto district, along the Sousa and Ferreira rivers and, in part, the Tâmega. This places the church within a particular regional expression of Romanesque architecture. Its main façade is also distinctive: it is considered one of the most ornate façades in Baixo Tâmega. The capitals of the south portal bear a variety of plant and figurative motifs; some partly recall Visigothic, Arab and Oriental models.

The Obras do Fidalgo is also known as the unfinished house of Vila Boa de Quires. It consists almost entirely of the main façade of an 18th-century building. This façade is considered one of the most extensive and imposing Baroque façades in Portuguese architecture. A comparison with the Igreja de Santo André reveals a difference in period and style: the church was built in the 13th century and belongs to the Romanesque building tradition, while the Obras do Fidalgo is associated with its Baroque main façade.

Archaeology and trail

The Castro de Quires, also called Castro de São Domingos, is a fortified settlement with four rows of walls. This defensive structure clearly distinguishes the archaeological site from the ornate façades of the church and the Obras do Fidalgo. The summit of the Castro de Quires also offers extensive views of the surrounding area. Both the settlement’s layout and the view across the landscape are central to this site.

The 16-kilometre Trilhos de Portocarreiro – PR8 circular trail has the Romanesque Igreja de Santo André as its recommended starting point. The route follows the Ribeira de Castro to a waterfall and passes the Pelourinho de Portocarreiro. The trail thus brings together both landscape and cultural history in the destination. Its length is a useful guide for planning; check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

The Pelourinho de Portocarreiro in Vila Boa de Quires is classified as an object of public interest. In historical interpretations, it is regarded as a symbol of the former autonomy of the municipality, which was dissolved in 1853. Its significance can therefore be understood not only through its classification, but also through the local history associated with it.

Wine is also part of Vila Boa de Quires’ profile. Casa de Vila Boa is considered one of the leading brands in the entire Vinhos Verdes region. With advance reservations, visitors can taste wines from Casa de Vila Boa, which are considered award-winning. Confirm booking details before your trip.
