Toutosa brings together a leafy church square and buildings whose histories span different centuries. The parish church of Santa Cristina de Toutosa, Casa do Ribeiro, Casa do Olival and Moinho da Fonte da Tapada each represent a different aspect of the local heritage. Visitors planning a stay can explore Toutosa through its architecture in particular: from the centrally located church to a house with a medieval tower and the ruins of a mill.

Church and leafy square

The Igreja de Santa Cristina de Toutosa is located at Largo Nossa Senhora da Livração in Toutosa. Largo da Senhora da Livração is a leafy square with the parish church of Santa Cristina de Toutosa at its centre. Thus, the church is identified not only by its address, but also as the focal point of a square. This provides a clear link between a religious building and public space, making it a good starting point if you would like to get to know Toutosa through its central landmarks.

Casa do Ribeiro: two building phases

Casa do Ribeiro is located in Livração, in the parish of Toutosa. It was classified as a monument of public interest in 2012 and is considered one of the most important examples of domestic Baroque architecture. The chronology is particularly informative: a crenellated tower was built in the 14th century, and the house was built around it in the first half of the 17th century. The two dates therefore represent different building phases. If you are interested in architectural history, you can see the distinction between the older tower and the later house without attributing both parts to a single period of construction.

House, gardens and mill ruins

Casa do Olival offers a different architectural comparison. The building is rectangular and has two storeys; the surrounding gardens are described as well maintained. Check their condition during your visit. While Casa do Ribeiro stands out for its building history and its connection to an older tower, Casa do Olival is notable for its clear arrangement of a basic form, two storeys and gardens.

Moinho da Fonte da Tapada has a different character. It is described as a roofless mill ruin covered in vegetation, with only the remaining walls visible. The mill is also noted for a circular cubo and a levada, both visible features. Check on site whether these details can still be seen during your visit. The Moinho thus adds another theme to the houses and church: the structural remains of a mill.

Finding your way to the buildings

To reach Moinho da Fonte da Tapada, follow the municipal road EM312 towards the centre of Toutosa. After the junction with Rua de Fermentães, turn left after about 50 metres onto an unpaved footpath. The described route to Casa do Olival also follows the EM312 towards the centre: 100 metres after Escola EB 2,3 de Toutosa, turn left onto an unpaved road. Roads, paths and the area around the school may change, so check the route before your visit.

A natural attraction nearby

A nearby point of interest is the Ecopista Livração–Amarante, a walking route used by the Toutosa school community. A publication from 2026 reports on this use and on how participants had direct contact with nature. The walking route offers a different focus from the buildings in the village: here, the emphasis is on experiencing nature along a route, while the church, houses and mill tell a story of the past. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus mainly on historic architecture or also explore this nature-related aspect.
