In Jardim do Monte Penedo, oak trees, streams, lakes and disused quarries form part of the landscape. Maia combines these natural sites with circular trails, pilgrimage routes and buildings from different periods. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you would prefer to spend most of your time outdoors or focus on cultural sites and local experiences.
Comparing natural sites and trails
Parque de Avioso covers approximately 30 hectares and includes the source of the Ribeira de Avioso. It has 4.5 kilometres of paths for walking or inline skating, as well as cycling paths. The hills also have their own features: Monte de São Miguel-O-Anjo lies on a shale hill and, at 255 metres, is the highest point in the municipality of Maia. At Monte da Caverneira, pine and oak trees of different compositions alternate; higher points offer views of the surrounding area. Monte de Santo Ovídeo has a viewpoint overlooking the parish of Castêlo da Maia.
If you want to choose routes by their layout and length, three trails offer specific points of comparison. The 6.1-kilometre linear PR4 – Lugares no Alto de Folgosa e S. Pedro Fins passes, among other places, the Santo Ovídio Chapel, Monte de São Miguel-o-Anjo and Vilar de Luz. The circular PR1 Vilar de Luz covers 5.5 kilometres along agricultural and wooded paths. The 3.1-kilometre circular PR2 Caminhos Rurais de Folgosa focuses on rural paths and examples of the built cultural landscape. The routes therefore differ both in their format and in what is described along the way.
Another option is the Caminho Português Central: the Camino de Santiago passes through Maia and is marked along its entire route with the characteristic yellow arrows. If you would rather focus on a single viewpoint than a longer route, Monte de Santo Ovídeo offers a different experience. Monte de Santa Cruz combines a religious function with a traditional pilgrimage and also serves as a recreational area and viewpoint.
Architecture, history and tradition
Quinta dos Cónegos offers a glimpse of Baroque architecture. Its manor house was built between 1727 and 1737, and its style shows a strong influence from the Nasoni school. Igreja do Divino Salvador in Moreira is a religious building in the Mannerist style. It belonged to the former monastery of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. Its main chapel features blue-and-yellow patterned tiles. The two buildings therefore offer a contrast in their architectural styles.
Other places also tell the story of Maia. Museu de História e Etnologia da Terra da Maia is housed in a building that served as the town hall until 1902. Fundação Gramaxo preserves the original rural buildings of Quinta da Boa Vista: these include the manor house, the threshing floor, Casa da Eira, the steward’s house, the cowshed, the coach house and the music pavilion. The Fundação Gramaxo Museum also houses parts of the Maria de Fátima Gramaxo collection. Torre Lidador offers a very different perspective: at 92 metres, it is the tallest building outside the city of Lisbon.
The annual São Miguel-O-Anjo festival follows a fixed date rule: it is celebrated on 29 September or the following Sunday, and the tradition is still maintained. In addition to its buildings and landscapes, Maia thus offers a recurring cultural event that can be planned for a specific time of year.
Special experiences and visitor information
