Seven houses and other agricultural buildings make up the rural ensemble of Nevogilde. This means the area can be understood not only through individual buildings, but also through the connection between residential life and agriculture. It also includes houses with distinctive architectural details, mills and structures along the Rio Mesio. If you are interested in rural heritage, these different scales provide a useful framework for choosing which aspects of Nevogilde to explore.
Historic Houses and Their Features
The Casa do Carreiro de Cima bears a coat of arms featuring the arms of the Pinto, Morais, Bacelar and Sarmento families. This heraldic detail offers a different way of approaching the architecture than its construction date. The Casa do Carreiro de Baixo is a 17th-century building; the Casa das Vinhas and the Casa da Afreita each date from the 18th century. The Casa do Carreiro de Baixo therefore dates from an earlier century than the Casa das Vinhas and the Casa da Afreita. A comparison focuses both on a named family coat of arms and on the century in which three houses were built. When placing Nevogilde’s historic houses in context, you can shift your attention between a specific design detail and the century given for each house.
Vines on a Property
The Casa das Vinhas connects architectural history and landscape at the scale of a single house: vines characterize the rest of its property. This offers a concrete comparison with the rural ensemble of houses and agricultural buildings: there, the focus is on a group of buildings, while here it is on the grounds of a house and its vines. If you would like to understand Nevogilde’s rural character through more than buildings alone, this landscape feature offers a distinct perspective.
Mills: Features and Condition
The Moinho da Ponte 2 has a millstone. The Casa da Afreita includes restored watermills. The Moinho da Devesa 1 has been described as being in poor condition; its condition may have changed since then. Check its condition before visiting. These are different aspects to compare: features, restoration and state of preservation.
Aqueduct and Bridge on the Rio Mesio
The Aqueduto de Nevogilde is approximately 100 metres long and crosses the Rio Mesio as well as an agricultural field. It is described as the only aqueduct in the municipality of Lousada. The length is approximate; check its current condition before travelling. The Ponte de Nevogilde is a small Roman bridge over the Rio Mesio with two arches. The two structures can be compared by scale and form: for the aqueduct, the points of interest are its approximate length and route over the river and field; for the bridge, its Roman classification and two arches.
