Lever is suited to travelers who want to give different levels of attention to local history, water engineering and a recurring connection with art. The Antiga Igreja Matriz is in the center; the Crestuma / Lever Dam is part of the infrastructure on the Douro. At Quinta da Fiação de Lever, a specific connection to cotton spinning and the venue for the Bienal Internacional de Arte de Gaia come together. These themes give you different reasons to consider Lever as a destination. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you are more interested in the former parish role, the navigation lock or the industrial history.

The former parish church in the center

The Antiga Igreja Matriz de Lever, also known as Igreja Velha, is in the center of Lever. It served as the parish church until the present parish church was built between 1969 and 1977. Local history can therefore be divided into two ecclesiastical phases: the former parish role of Igreja Velha and the construction of the present church. The period from 1969 to 1977 relates to the construction of the present parish church; it does not date the older church. If you are interested in the history of the area, this change in the parish’s role offers a specific historical connection.

Dam, lock and trail

The Crestuma / Lever Dam began operating in 1986. It lies upstream on the Douro, at the easternmost edge of the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. The facility includes a navigation lock on the left bank of the river. The dam thus adds a distinct infrastructure connection to the church history: here, the focus is on the operation of the facility and the function of the lock.

Another point of interest is the trail from the Crestuma / Lever Dam to Rua da Herdade. It reopened in 2021 as part of the Encostas do Douro project. Check current trail conditions before going for a walk. The endpoints distinguish this trail from the lock: here, the route from the dam to Rua da Herdade is identified, while the lock is a facility for navigation. This lets you distinguish the two themes when planning your trip without treating them as the same experience.

Local connections and industrial history

The Centro de Educação Ambiental is also located in Lever, Vila Nova de Gaia. This clearly identifies another named location. Together with the town center, the dam and the quinta, it adds another point of reference for finding your way around the area.

Quinta da Fiação de Lever comprises three pavilions with a total area of 6,000 square meters; its spatial configuration may change. It is located on the same site as the former Companhia de Fiação de Crestuma. The company began cotton spinning in 1854 and was the second-largest producer of this type in northern Portugal. This gives the quinta’s industrial history a specific connection to cotton production. The Bienal Internacional de Arte de Gaia takes place at the quinta every two years. This location therefore brings together a historical connection to textile production and a recurring art event. If you are planning your trip around the biennale, check the event dates before making your plans.
