Church architecture, musical tradition and a municipal swimming pool offer different ways to experience Gueifães during a stay. The history is particularly vivid in the dates of two churches: the oldest parish church already existed in 1527, while the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Saúde has a more recent building history. There is also the Banda Marcial de Gueifães, active since 1837, and religious festival traditions. When planning, you can arrange these themes according to your interests: architectural history, music and specific cultural events each offer a different focus.

Churches and architectural history

The oldest parish church in Gueifães already existed in 1527 and was connected to the monastery of Leça do Balio, which provided its spiritual care. Its bell tower dates from 1864; the carvings on the altars are distinguished by their harmonious lines. Different details thus stand out: the early ecclesiastical connection, the later-dated tower and the design of the altars.

The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Saúde has a different chronology. Its construction began in 1974, and the final building work was completed in 1990. Several stained-glass windows by Horácio Viegas were added in 2000 and 2001. On 15 February 2003, the improvement works were inaugurated during the church’s solemn consecration by D. Armindo Lopes Coelho, Bishop of Porto. Compared with the oldest parish church, the focus here is on a building history dating from the late 20th century and on the stained-glass windows added later.

Music and religious tradition

The Banda Marcial de Gueifães was founded on 12 December 1837 and has been active continuously ever since. It organizes the annual Semana da Música, which is part of Maia’s cultural programme; dates vary from year to year. The band also performs at pilgrimages, festivals, concerts and other events. These performances take place in Maia and elsewhere.

The Festas em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Saúde are also part of Gueifães’s religious tradition and date back to the 16th century. The annual dates vary. So if you would like to plan your stay around a cultural event, check the dates of the relevant Semana da Música or Festas in advance. The long history of the band and the festivals reflects traditions built up over time; for travel planning, the specific dates matter too.

School, camellias and swimming pool

The Escola Príncipe da Beira in Gueifães was inaugurated on 6 March 1894 by King D. Carlos and Queen Dona Amélia. A camellia specimen can also be found at the school. This historical date and botanical detail add another local point of interest to the churches and music.

The Complexo Municipal de Piscinas de Gueifães has a 25 m × 14.5 m competition pool with a depth of 1.2 to 1.6 m, as well as a 14 m × 6 m teaching pool with a depth of 0.60 to 0.87 m. The competition pool is larger and deeper; the teaching pool is more compact and shallower. These measurements offer a practical way to compare the two types of pool.
