A parish church dating from 1713, archaeological sites and paths through vineyards give Vila Cova de Lixa a range of historical and scenic landmarks. The local calendar also features regular events and wine-related visits. When planning your trip, you can already weigh up which of these themes will shape your visit.

Architectural history and Leonardo Coimbra

The Igreja Paroquial de Vila Cova da Lixa is an 18th-century building dating from 1713. Two chapels have older foundation dates: the Capela de São Roque was founded in 1599, and the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Angústias in 1656, at Quinta de Teixeira. The Capela de Santo António dates back to the first half of the 17th century. Vila Cova de Lixa thus brings together different periods of local architectural history, from early chapel foundations to the parish church of the early 18th century.

Leonardo Coimbra is also associated with the town. The Casa da Cultura Leonardo Coimbra in Vila Cova de Lixa is his birthplace; Coimbra lived from 1883 to 1936 and was a prominent figure in Portuguese philosophy. Visitors to the Casa da Cultura can see a permanent exhibition about his work. The Casa do Dr. Leonardo Coimbra and the Capela de Santo António are also of interest for a view of the urban fabric of central Lixa: both are integrated into it.

Archaeological landmarks add to this architectural history. Monte do Outeiro in Vila Cova da Lixa is an archaeological settlement site with protection level 2. The Igreja Velha de São Salvador de Vila Cova is an archaeological church with a tower and necropolis; protection levels 1 and 2 are listed for it. Here, you will find both historic buildings and sites with an archaeological designation.

Market and recurring events

The weekly market takes place on Tuesdays. Other events are held at different times throughout the year: Feira das Oitavas falls on Easter Monday, and Divino Salvador, also known as São Salvador, takes place in Vila Cova da Lixa in August. In September, Feira das Uvas is held on the first Monday. The pilgrimage in honour of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias is scheduled for the first Sunday in September. These dates are practical reference points for planning your trip; if you have a particular event in mind, it is especially worth taking the relevant day of the week or the movable Easter date into account.

Trails through vineyards and views of Lixa

The Caminho de Torres in Felgueiras is 16.9 km long and passes through Vila Cova da Lixa. Its Lixa section starts in Borba de Godim and runs between vineyards to the historic centre of Lixa. Quinta do Paço, a historic site dating from the 14th century, is also along this section. The route description thus connects the landscape with a named historic site without reducing the walk to just one theme.

The Ciclovia do Ladário-Lixa has a different route length: the cycle path is 1,600 metres long and lies in Vila Cova da Lixa and Borba de Godim. The Caminho de Torres and the Ciclovia are therefore two different ways to explore the town and its surroundings, each with its own length and route description. Monte do Ladário offers a scenic view of the town of Lixa.

Wine and local craft traditions

Quinta da Lixa in Monte, Vila Cova da Lixa, offers guided tours of its vineyards and wine cellars. The wines under the Fernando Horta brand provide another specific connection to the area: they come from a valley in Vila Cova da Lixa. Fernando Horta lists the grape varieties Arinto, Alvarinho, Azal, Espadal, Loureiro, Trajadura and Vinhão. These details highlight different aspects: guided tours at Quinta da Lixa on the one hand, and the wines’ origin and named varieties on the other.

The local craft tradition includes the Terra de Sousa embroidery pattern, also known as Bordado da Lixa. Together with the buildings, events and wine connections, it offers another perspective on what makes the town distinctive.
