When considering Alfena as a travel destination, you can base your decision on specific themes: the stone bridge over the Leça, the history of two chapels, the cultural spaces of a former school, or a festival held during a set summer period. These highlights answer different questions: Which buildings interest you, what local history would you like to learn about, and does your trip fall during a particular festival year?

A Stone Bridge over the Leça

The Ponte de São Lázaro provides a crossing over the River Leça in Alfena. Its stone structure has two arches of unequal size. The bridge thus brings together function and design: it serves as a river crossing and also has a distinctive architectural feature. Visitors who enjoy looking at historic buildings in terms of their construction will find a clear point of interest in the different arches.

Two Chapels, Different Histories

The Capela de S. Lázaro has medieval origins and was associated with a leprosarium in the surrounding area. Another historical point of reference is the renovation commissioned in 1623. The medieval origins and the later renovation are two separate dates: 1623 refers to the renovation, not the chapel’s construction.

The Capela de S. Lázaro is also connected with the pilgrimage routes of the Caminho de Santiago: it is associated with religious buildings along these routes. After long walks, the faithful rested beneath its porch. This historical context adds a religious and practical function of the porch to the chapel’s architectural history; it describes how the porch was used in the past, not present-day access to a pilgrimage route.

The commission and location of the Capela de N.ª Sr.ª da Conceição offer further clues to its history. Captain Vicente Ferreira Alfena and Luzia Antónia do Sacramento commissioned its construction in 1733. The chapel stands at the edge of an old road that came from Ermesinde. Inside are images of Sr.ª da Conceição, Sr.ª das Dores and S. Vicente Ferrer. By comparison, the history of the Capela de S. Lázaro combines medieval origins and the 1623 renovation with its links to a leprosarium and religious buildings along pilgrimage routes.

Culture in a Former Primary School

The Centro Cultural de Alfena is housed in a former primary school. The building thus brings together its former use as a school and its cultural function. Its facilities include an auditorium, as well as reading, exhibition and leisure spaces. These spaces give Alfena a cultural focus distinct from that of the chapels: here, the emphasis is on different uses within a cultural centre, while the chapels are shaped above all by their architecture, religious connections and historical development.

The Leça and FestINvallis

The Rio Leça also flows through Parque Vale do Leça in Alfena. The river thus features in two different local settings: as the waterway crossed by the Ponte de São Lázaro, and as a river in the park. The FestINvallis – International Folklore Festival adds a specific event to the cultural calendar. It takes place every two years, between the last Sunday in July and the first Saturday in August.

Weighing Up the Right Reason to Visit

When choosing Alfena as a travel destination, you can distinguish between place-based history and an event tied to specific dates. The bridge, chapels and Centro Cultural offer different perspectives on architecture and cultural history; FestINvallis also makes planning dependent on a particular festival year. This can help you decide whether Alfena suits your interest in historic buildings and cultural spaces, or whether the festival dates are the deciding factor for your trip.
