Loures brings together traces of its local history, architecture, cultural offerings and green spaces. The historic town centre grew up beside the parish church and gradually spread towards the slopes of Alvogas, the riverbanks and the former landing quay at the old bridge over the River Loures. This development provides a framework for understanding the city’s different historic sites.

Local History and Architecture

The commercial buildings on Rua da República reflect the modernism of the 1940s. Their design combines azulejos, glass, wood, wrought iron, concrete and stone. The Paços do Concelho offers a different architectural reference point: built in 1916 in the neoclassical style, it features elements of Art Nouveau and historicism. The different materials and styles offer several tangible points of reference for the history of architecture in Loures.

The Palácio dos Marqueses da Praia e Monforte dates from the first half of the 19th century. After the municipality was established in 1886, it housed the municipal administration; today it is the seat of the Assembleia Municipal. The Igreja de Santa Maria de Loures was originally a Templar chapel. It was altered in the 17th and 18th centuries and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.

Another historic building is the Casa do Adro, a 17th-century residence beside the parish church of Loures. Its courtyard contains a water-lifting wheel and a small porch. From 1985 to 1998, the house was home to the municipal museum. These dates distinguish its former uses from the current functions of the other buildings mentioned.

The Edifício 4 de Outubro was formerly the seat of the municipal administration. On 4 October 1910 at 3 p.m., the Republic was proclaimed there and a green-and-red flag was raised. The Fonte 4 de Outubro dates from 1720; it was formerly supplied with water from an aqueduct built during the Marquis of Pombal’s time. The Saloio tradition of the municipality of Loures is also part of its history: it involved supplying Lisbon with horticultural produce, as well as other goods and services.

Cultural Offerings and Green Spaces

The Galeria Municipal Vieira da Silva is located in Parque AdĂŁo Barata. As part of its cultural outreach activities, it offers creative workshops, guided tours and laboratories for artistic experimentation. This provides different ways to engage with art, from collaborative creative work and guided tours to experimentation.

Parque Adão Barata is a green space with a sports court, two children’s playgrounds, a seniors’ outdoor fitness area, a picnic area, food and drink facilities, and parking for 50 vehicles. It is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. If this is an important factor in your plans, check the specific conditions on site.

Jardim Municipal Major Rosa Bastos is in the centre of Loures. Its features include a large lawn, a water basin, a modern children’s playground, a picnic area and a bandstand dating from the 1950s. Compared with Parque Adão Barata, the lawn, water basin and bandstand stand out as distinctive features. Beside the garden, the Statue of the Saloios recalls local traditions and the collective memory of the municipality of Loures.
