The panoramic swing at Cabeço de Montachique is at an altitude of 409 metres. From there, the 360-degree view stretches across the Lisbon region to Almada and the Serra de Sintra. Loures offers its own highlights too: nature trails and birdwatching, museums showcasing regional history, and wine from Bucelas.

Loures lies on the outskirts of Lisbon and is traditionally known as a saloio area. Its market gardens once supplied the city with vegetables and fresh produce. CP trains on the Azambuja line and the red line of the Lisbon Metro serve the municipality. Check connections before your trip.

Nature Trails, Views and Birdwatching

Visitors interested in local flora and fauna will find an approximately one-kilometre walking trail at the Estação da Biodiversidade de Fontelas, with nine information panels. The site is also a citizen science project: visitors can record, identify and share species through biodiversity4all.org using the “RIPAR” method. Check before your visit whether the platform is available for participation.

Parque do Cabeço de Montachique covers 32 hectares of varied woodland. At Cabeço, the panoramic swing offers a different perspective on the landscape. At Parque Municipal do Cabeço de Montachique, the adventure park offers tree climbing, a slide, orienteering and paintball; check what is currently available before your visit. Parque da Várzea e Costeiras has a different focus, with opportunities for birdwatching, walks, educational activities and nature tourism.

The Passadiços do Tejo is a 6.1-kilometre walking and cycling route between Santa Iria de Azóia and Sacavém. It passes through marshland and includes bridges, tunnels and viewpoints overlooking birds and the Tagus. The route opened in 2023; check trail conditions before your trip. Another hiking option is the pilgrimage route to Fátima and Santiago: near Sacavém, it enters Loures and follows an almost flat, 5.8-kilometre stretch along the Trancão River. The different lengths and trail characteristics can help you choose, but they do not form a single route.

Museums, Industrial Heritage and History

Since 1998, the Museu Municipal de Loures has been housed at Quinta do Conventinho, an Arrábida Franciscan monastery founded in 1574. It offers exhibitions, tours and guided visits, as well as a shop and a chapel. The Museu de Cerâmica de Sacavém offers a glimpse into the industrial history of the municipality: its purpose-built museum building stands on the former site of the Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém. The museum preserves and presents the factory’s heritage in the context of Loures’s industrialisation. Its exhibition spaces include Forno 18, an example of kiln architecture.

The Rota Memorial do Convento also passes through Loures. It connects historical and landscape monuments from the 18th century between Lisbon and Mafra and also pays tribute to José Saramago. An interactive map on the route’s website lets visitors choose places to visit and follow the novel’s geographical paths; check the map when planning your trip. At the Sítio Arqueológico de Frielas, remains of mosaic floors from a Roman villa dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD have been preserved.

Other collections offer insights into local ways of life: the Espaço Memória dos Saloios at Tété in Lousa preserves saloio arts, ways of life and identity. The Núcleo Museológico Casa-Museu José Pedro displays ceramic works created by José da Silva Pedro during the last twenty years of his life. Both venues complement the museum and industrial heritage with different perspectives on local heritage.

Bucelas Wine and Seasonal Experiences

Bucelas wine is produced in Loures, in a wine-growing area demarcated in 1911. The permanent exhibition at the Museu do Vinho e da Vinha presents key stages of vineyard work and traditional winemaking methods. Alongside the museum in Bucelas, Arinto & Sabores Saloios pairs guided tastings with saloio products. Check current dates for each edition. The Festival do Caracol Saloio also puts food in the spotlight: in July, you can try original dishes made with snails and other gastropods; confirm the current dates before your trip.

If you would like to combine wine tastings with a visit to a winery, the Rota dos Vinhos de Bucelas, Carcavelos e Colares includes wineries in Bucelas and tastings. Quinta da Murta offers vineyard and cellar tours with wine tastings by prior arrangement, with petiscos available on request. Terms and offerings may change; confirm arrangements in advance. Carnaval Saloio de Loures takes place every February and includes the presentation of the carnival kings, balls, parades and a closing ceremony on Ash Wednesday. Check the dates and programme for each edition.
