Quelfes offers plenty to interest travellers who are as keen on church architecture and Roman history as they are on nature and lagoon landscapes. The Igreja Matriz de Quelfes and the Vila Romana da Quinta de Marim showcase different historical themes, while the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa offers a glimpse of diverse habitats.

Church architecture and Roman history

Different architectural features come together at the Igreja Matriz de Quelfes: the main portal and chancel arch are designed in the Renaissance style, while a Gothic side door points to medieval origins. Inside, the church is spacious and divided into three naves. This allows visitors to appreciate the building both through its layout and the different forms of its architectural elements.

The Vila Romana da Quinta de Marim reveals a different historical period. This archaeological site is located in the parish of Quelfes, near the Algarve coast. The complex included a dwelling, a bathhouse, warehouses, a temple, a mausoleum and several necropolises. The remains point to use from the 2nd century until the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 5th century. The period is therefore not confined to a single century.

Stories from other eras

The Ponte Velha de Quelfes is also of historical significance to the local population. A battle between the inhabitants of Olhão and Moncarapacho and French troops took place nearby on 18 June 1808. The event explains the significance of the area around the bridge, without requiring the bridge itself to be described as a memorial to the battle.

The Chalé de Marim is associated with the poet João Lúcio: he commissioned the building in 1916, and work was interrupted after his death in 1918. The Chalé Dr. João Lúcio currently houses the Ecoteca Museum. It is part of the National Network of Ecotecas and serves as a centre for environmental education. So, alongside historic buildings, environmental education and engagement with nature are also among the themes in Quelfes.

Lagoon landscapes and experiences in nature

The Moinho de Maré de Marim is located in Quinta de Marim, in the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. The tidal mill is currently open to visitors; its rooftop terrace is also accessible and offers views of the surrounding area. As opening arrangements may change, it is worth checking the latest visitor information in advance.

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa encompasses a variety of landscapes: barrier islands, salt marshes and sandbanks, as well as dunes, salt pans, freshwater and brackish lagoons, waterways, agricultural land and wooded areas. Those interested in the natural and cultural history of the area will also find the CEAM – Centro de Educação Ambiental de Marim in Quinta de Marim. Its “Ria Formosa” exhibition consists of five sections covering natural and cultural heritage, geomorphology, lagoon dynamics, habitats, flora and fauna, as well as the natural park’s archaeology and history.

For outdoor exercise, the Circuito de Manutenção de Pinheiros de Marim has three routes; the longest is 3 km long. Outdoor exercise equipment is installed along the routes. The Jardim Mediterrânico de Quelfes features native vegetation and is designed to use very little or no water. It was inaugurated on 19 November 2022 and laid out as a dry garden with plants from the Algarve. It is also intended to serve as an interactive museum with environmental education activities.

Ilha da Armona has beaches facing the sea and the lagoon. At low tide, warm natural pools form there. Possible activities include canoeing, sailing, diving and recreational fishing; providers and conditions may vary. Wildlife is also part of the natural landscape: the Caimão, known in Portuguese as Galinha-sultana, is found in Ria Formosa and is the symbol of the natural park. It is considered a rare and threatened bird species; its conservation status may change.
