Olhão’s waterfront is integrated into Ria Formosa. With its islands, a distinctive ridge and a rich history, the town offers different ways to explore it: through its landscape and waters, as well as its architecture and maritime culture.

Ria Formosa and Cerro da Cabeça

Armona is the only island in the Município de Olhão. From Olhão, you can reach it by boat in about 15 minutes; the journey may vary slightly depending on service conditions. Armona has a fishing settlement with restaurants serving traditional fish and seafood dishes. There are also opportunities for windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. The island thus combines culinary discoveries with a range of water sports.

Cerro da Cabeça offers a different perspective on the landscape. The ridge reaches 249 metres and is the easternmost elevation of Serra de Monte Figo. Its rock dates from the Upper Jurassic. As a viewpoint, it offers views of the Algarve coast and is part of the Natura 2000 network. Its elevation, geological structure and protected natural setting give the place a distinctive character.

Churches, markets and the city’s history

The history of Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário began on 4 June 1698, when construction, funded by the fishing community, got underway. The church opened for worship in 1715, even though it was not yet complete. Its main altar is considered the tallest Baroque altarpiece in the Algarve. The building’s history and furnishings offer two distinct perspectives on Olhão’s religious heritage.

Another historic church is Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Soledade, Olhão’s first parish church. It has primarily served religious and burial functions. The Mercados Municipais add a different architectural touch: the single-storey buildings, with four glazed cylindrical towers, have a monumental appearance. They were inaugurated on 1 May 1916 and face Ria Formosa. The markets are a commercial hub and are also associated with processions at which the fishing fleet is blessed.

Founded in 1765, the Compromisso Marítimo adds to this picture of the city’s history. Its building now houses the Museu da Cidade de Olhão. The houses also reflect different forms of urban development: small white houses with geometrically decorated attic cornices survive in the fishing quarter. The streets along Avenida da República reflect urban planning from the early 20th century. Olhão also has hundreds of houses with the typical Algarve-style Açoteia, where a rooftop terrace replaces the roof.

On the edge of Bairro do Levante, murals and graffiti around Fábrica Velha recall Olhão’s former canning industry. These works add another facet to the city’s history: alongside churches, markets and homes, the memory of its industrial past also forms part of the townscape.

Routes, islands and experiences

Caminho das Lendas is a walking route connecting five of the most important squares in Olhão’s historic area. For another walking excursion, consider the circular OLH PR1 – Trilho de Descoberta de Marim: it is three kilometres long, follows natural trails and is rated easy. The details about its length and terrain help distinguish these two different ways of getting around, without combining them into a single route.

In Ria Formosa, Salinas do Grelha offers guided kayaking tours. No previous kayaking experience is required. Advance contact is required to book the guided tour and the “Dead Sea” experience. As booking procedures can change, check how to book before making plans.

Ilha da Culatra can also be reached from Olhão only by boat; boat connections and timetables are seasonal. There are no motorised vehicles on the island, but there is a long beach beside a calm sea. Visibility in the water is about 15 metres and can vary depending on conditions, making Culatra suitable for divers too. Restaurants on the island specialise in Arroz de lingueirão and Caldeirada. Restaurant offerings on the islands may change.

These different facets give you a concrete basis for deciding whether Olhão is the right destination for your interests.
