Discover Vaqueiros via its hiking trails, the parish church of São Pedro and the history of a former village school that once housed a museum. Two questions can help with your planning: would you rather choose trails by distance and route, or focus on local history? The named routes answer these questions in different ways, with details on length, start and end points, landscape or audio guides.

Hiking trails: distance and landscape

The PR8 hiking trail, “Em busca do Vale Encantado,” is about 13 km long and classified as a “short route.” A 2023 Almargem newsletter gives the distance for Section 8 of the Via Algarviana between Vaqueiros and Martim Longo as 18.7 km. The comparison gives a sense of the different distances involved: the section is longer than the PR8 and runs between two named places. The Via Algarviana itself is the 300 km GR13 long-distance trail, which passes through Vaqueiros. This makes it possible to distinguish between individual trail distances, a section connecting two places and a long-distance trail.

Section 8 also includes the Ribeira da Foupana, which the trail follows. A 2023 Almargem newsletter highlights its lush vegetation as one of the route’s highlights. Alongside the distance, this provides a specific landscape feature that characterizes the route of this section.

The Parque de Merendas Fonte da Parra picnic area is located by the Vaqueiros dam, with a “short route” hiking trail running alongside it. The dam is therefore a named landmark for both the picnic area and the adjacent trail. This offers a different starting point from the distance details for the section from Vaqueiros to Martim Longo.

The audio-guided “Entre Montes e Moinhos” trail is in the parish of Vaqueiros. The PR9 ACT, “Percurso Interpretativo da Aldeia Típica de Vaqueiros,” starts and ends at the Aldeia Típica de Vaqueiros. Different details help you find your way here: one trail’s name points to its audio guide, while the other has named start and end points.

Along the PR9 ACT, the landscape includes cork and holm oak montado woodlands, field boundaries lined with olive trees, pine plantations, wheat fields and vegetable gardens. Wild boar, foxes, Egyptian mongooses, rabbits, hares and genets may also occur along the route. The landscape features therefore range from cultivated areas and plantations to the possibility of spotting wildlife; sightings are not guaranteed.

Church and local history

The Igreja de São Pedro is the parish church of Vaqueiros. It probably dates back to the 16th century and was remodelled in the 18th century. These details refer to different building phases: a probable date of origin and a later remodelling. Anyone interested in the history of the church can keep this distinction in mind, rather than reducing both details to a single date.

The old primary school is also part of the area’s history: the former Núcleo Museológico de Vaqueiros opened there in June 2001 with the exhibition “Vidas no Campo.” The museum closed to the public in April 2004 and was subsequently dismantled. The opening, exhibition and later closure form a connected historical sequence centred on the former school.
