39 complete and fragmentary game boards, along with 18 small playing pieces: the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Arqueologia in Alcoutim displays an unusual collection from the Islamic period. The objects are divided into six types. As a group of finds from a single archaeological site in Portugal, the collection is considered the country’s largest known assemblage of Islamic game boards and types. Complete boards and fragments are displayed alongside the playing pieces, making it possible to compare the variety of surviving forms directly.

A circular route through Alcoutim’s sights

The PR3 Os Encantos de Alcoutim is a circular walking route of about four kilometres that passes important sights in the town. Its listed destinations include the Ruínas do Castelo Velho, the Castelo da Vila, the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Igreja Matriz de S. Salvador, the Capela de Santo António, the river beach and the Casa do Artesanato. The route thus brings together different aspects of the town: historic buildings, religious sites, crafts and the river beach. Its approximate length provides guidance when choosing a route, but does not indicate how long the walk will take.

From early settlement to the Renaissance

The archaeological periods reach far back in time. The Menir do Lavajo dates from the second half of the 4th millennium BC, around 3500 BC. The 3.14-metre-high monolith is made of greywacke; its dark grey colour, star-shaped appearance and elliptical cross-section give it a distinctive form. At the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Arqueologia in the Castelo de Alcoutim, a historical exhibition spans the Neolithic period, dated to 5000–3000 BC, through to the 20th century.

Other sites tell the story of later centuries. The Castelo Velho de Alcoutim has several settlement phases, most of which date from between the 8th/9th and 12th/13th centuries. Construction of the Castelo de Alcoutim, by contrast, began under King Dinis in the 14th century: the fortress served to defend the border and control trade on the Guadiana. The Igreja Matriz de SĂŁo Salvador offers a glimpse of a later architectural period. It is considered an example of early Renaissance buildings in the Algarve and was built between 1538 and 1554 on the site of a medieval church.

Museums with different perspectives

The museums focus on different subjects. The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Arte Sacra traces Alcoutim’s religious art history from 16th-century Manueline style to 19th-century Neoclassicism. The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico Dr. JoĂŁo Dias features a permanent exhibition centred on the life and work of physician and surgeon JoĂŁo Francisco Dias. It includes original documents, a documentary film, former consultation and operating rooms, as well as surgical instruments and furniture.

The Museu do Rio focuses on life on the Guadiana, covering navigation, trade, fishing, smuggling and the riverside communities. Alcoutim’s history is closely linked to the river’s tidal reach. In the past, boats carrying goods from the region often had to wait there for several hours for favourable conditions for navigation. Today, boat trips are possible on the Guadiana near Alcoutim. To take a guided tour of the archaeology museum, the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Arte Sacra, the NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico Dr. JoĂŁo Dias or the NĂșcleo HistĂłrico de Alcoutim, register in advance at the reception of the Castelo de Alcoutim.

Riverside, festivals and local traditions

At the Praia fluvial do Pego Fundo river beach on the Ribeira de Cadavais, visitors will find calm water, a garden and a volleyball court. Facilities enable people with reduced mobility to access the sandy beach and water. Recurring events also bring people together across the Guadiana: the cross-border region for the Caminheiros hiking festival, held annually in late winter, extends as far as SanlĂșcar de Guadiana. Another annual tradition is the river procession in honour of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the Virgin of Seafarers. Decorated boats carrying the people of Alcoutim in Portugal and SanlĂșcar in Spain meet on the Guadiana; exact programme dates may change.

Crafts are also part of the character of the municipality of Alcoutim. Linen work, embroidery, lace-making, reed basketry, pottery and shoemaking are still practised there. These traditions complement the museum and river perspectives with a broad range of handicrafts.
