Alcoutim combines river activities and hiking trails with a diverse architectural and collecting history. When planning your visit, it is worth looking at the different options: some take you to the water, while others lead to a specific route or focus on archaeological and historical themes. You can choose what to focus on according to the type of activity you prefer.

Riverside and activities on the water

Alcoutim lies on the banks of the Rio Guadiana. However, the Praia Fluvial do Pego Fundo river beach is on a different waterway: it is on the left bank of the Ribeira de Cadavais, 500 metres from the centre of Alcoutim. This distinction helps you get your bearings if you want to combine the town’s riverside setting with a visit to the beach.

On the Rio Guadiana, visitors can rent canoes or take boat trips to explore the river. Operator availability may vary, so check what is available in advance. Another activity is the cross-border zipline operated by LimitZero: it runs for 720 metres from SanlĂşcar de Guadiana to Alcoutim. Its availability may also vary.

Hiking and distinguishing between trails

The PR3 - Alcoutim is seven kilometres long, is classified as moderate and starts at Praça da República. This trail therefore has a specified starting point, length and difficulty level. As recommended for this route, check the route details locally before setting off.

The PR3 Os encantos de Alcoutim is designated as a walking and mountain-biking route. This route also offers the possibility of crossing the river to the other bank and visiting the Spanish town of SanlĂşcar del Guadiana. Crossing is a possible route option, not a guaranteed connection: conditions may vary, so it is advisable to check before setting out. This distinguishes the trail from PR3 - Alcoutim not only by its name, but also by the described option to cross the river.

Archaeology and Islamic heritage

The Núcleo Museológico de Arqueologia is located inside Castelo de Alcoutim. It presents the exhibition “O Património Arqueológico de Alcoutim”; its contents may be revised over time. A particular focus of the collection is the Coleção Jogos Intemporais: it includes the largest collection of Islamic board games known in Portugal, as well as the only known examples of mancala in Portugal.

Castelo Velho, also known as Castro de Santa Bárbara, is considered an important monument of Portugal’s Islamic period and one of the Algarve’s most important Islamic military sites. Today’s Castelo de Alcoutim has its own historical context: it took shape during the Christian Reconquista; its construction or remodelling is thought to date to the second half of the 13th century.

Churches and architectural history

Igreja Matriz S. Salvador is considered one of the finest examples of the early Renaissance in the Algarve. Ermida de Nossa Sr.ª da Conceição preserves a Manueline portal from a renovation campaign in the second decade of the 16th century. Igreja da Misericórdia was also built in the 16th century. Together, these buildings reflect different historical influences, from their Renaissance classification to the Manueline portal.

The Escadaria Barroca belongs to a later phase of construction. Military engineers built it in the second half of the 17th century or at the beginning of the 18th century to connect the church with the Vila. Its purpose makes it an architectural point of interest distinct from the churches mentioned above: here, the focus is on the connection between the church and the Vila.

The Guadiana as a historic transport route

Cais Velho has always been Alcoutim’s most important connection to the Guadiana. Regional products arrived and were shipped out through the quay; it also served as a departure and arrival point for travellers. Alcoutim’s river history is therefore not only about its location by the water, but also about the quay’s former role in transporting goods and people.

Mercado Municipal de Alcoutim is also connected to regional produce: it is used for the production and resale of food and products from the region. This focus complements the archaeological and architectural themes with a look at food and local products.
