The Museu Municipal brings Vila de Rei’s rural history to life: housed in one of the town’s oldest buildings, it recreates the way of life of a wealthy farming family between the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum showcases traditional rural activities and occupations, including winemaking, pig slaughter, shoemaking, blacksmithing, beekeeping, pottery and resin extraction. Family life and different forms of work are presented side by side, offering a vivid introduction to the town’s cultural history.

Cultural History, Churches and Crafts

The Antiga Igreja Matriz, also known as Igreja de Santa Maria, is thought to have been built during the reign of Saint Isabel in the 13th or 14th century. Archaeological finds in the church grounds contribute to its historical and heritage significance for the municipality of Vila de Rei. At the Igreja da Misericórdia, a different connection takes centre stage: it is located in the oldest urban settlement core. Together, the two churches offer different perspectives on the town’s history and its historic centre.

Other museums focus on their own subjects. The Núcleo Museológico da Antiga Cadeia includes the Sala da Cadeia and complements the Museu Municipal. The Museu da Escola da Fundada is housed in a former primary school building built in 1960. Vila de Rei’s craft traditions include basket weaving, weaving, decorative arts, beekeeping, creative sewing and embroidery. Those interested in crafts can encounter both traditional activities at the Museu Municipal and other local traditions.

Viewpoints and Geodetic Heritage

The Rota dos Miradouros comprises nine viewpoints spread across the municipality. These include the Miradouro do Centro Geodésico and the Miradouro do Penedo Furado. At the nearby Picoto da Melriça, the Centro Geodésico de Portugal offers 360-degree views across a wide horizon, including the Serra da Lousã and, on a clear day, the Serra da Estrela. To get there, head from the centre towards Sertã: after 1.8 km, you will reach a signposted turn-off for Picoto da Melriça – Centro Geodésico de Portugal; from there, it is a further 900 m to your destination.

The Museu da Geodesia is located beside Picoto da Melriça at the Centro Geodésico de Portugal. It preserves a historical and scientific heritage linked to the modernisation of Portuguese geodesy and is considered unique in Portugal. Views and geodesy come together at the same named location, but offer two distinct reasons to explore Picoto da Melriça.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

When exploring the trails around Penedo Furado, it helps to first consider the route type. The Passadiços do Penedo Furado form an approximately 2-kilometre loop, with Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado recommended as the starting point. The Passadiços follow the Ribeira do Codes. By contrast, the Trilho das Bufareiras is a linear Pequena Rota hiking trail between Vila de Rei and Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado. It follows the Ribeira do Pisão and passes through Pisão Cimeiro. This lets you consider a loop with an approximate distance and a linear route with named landmarks according to your planning needs. Check the latest trail information before setting out.

Waterside Landscapes and Local Cuisine

In Fernandaires, views and waterside scenery offer different perspectives on the area. Praia Fluvial de Fernandaires has a large pool fed by the Castelo de Bode reservoir. From Miradouro de Fernandaires, you can see the reservoir, the village and Praia Fluvial de Fernandaires. The viewpoint features viewing platforms, picnic tables and parking. There is also a municipal mooring at the beach for recreational and maritime tourism boats. If you plan to use it, confirm reservations and operating conditions before your trip.

Praia do Bostelim lies between Fundada and São João do Peso in a natural setting characterised by high biodiversity. For culinary discoveries, local cuisine includes Sopa de Peixe, Bacalhau à Vila de Rei and Bacalhau à Cobra. These dishes add a specific selection of local food to the cultural and landscape highlights, offering another starting point for planning your trip alongside museums, viewpoints and hiking trails.
