Castelo Branco brings together a geological landscape close to the city centre, garden art, regional embroidery and places that open up the natural environment along the Tagus. Parque do Barrocal covers approximately 40 hectares and is part of the UNESCO Naturtejo Global Geopark and the cross-border Tagus-Tajo International Biosphere Reserve. Its seven viewpoints, geological formations, walkways and nature trails offer a range of highlights, alongside a playground and a birdwatching centre. Biodiversity changes with the seasons. Landscape, nature observation and culture therefore provide different themes to consider when planning a trip.
Trails and landscapes
The PR1 – Rota da Gardunha hiking trail begins at the entrance to Louriçal do Campo, at an altitude of 470 metres. The Rota da Gardunha leads to the Ocreza Gorge. There, stone water channels provide access to secluded natural pools of crystal-clear water, separated by waterfalls. The gorge is also home to 18 hidden watermills. The geological park, with its viewpoints and nature trails, and the gorge landscape shaped by water, waterfalls and mills therefore offer different nature-related experiences.
Praia Fluvial do Sesmo is surrounded by hills and valleys characteristic of the Pinhal Interior landscape. The present-day river bathing area was created by building a weir on the Ribeira de Almaceda. Both descriptions draw attention to waterside landscapes without conflating them with the Ocreza Gorge.
The natural environment of the Tagus can also be explored in a different way: the Centro de Interpretação Ambiental features 14 interactive exhibits about Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional and offers a virtual journey along the Tagus. These interpretive and virtual experiences complement the outdoor trails and landscapes.
Gardens, embroidery and city history
Jardim do Paço Episcopal is laid out in a rectangular shape. Its main terrace features five basins with distinctive water features; the garden also includes Lago das Coroas, Escadaria dos Reis and Escadaria dos Apóstolos. Its formal design and the named basins and staircases give the garden a distinct place among Castelo Branco’s cultural themes.
Bordado de Castelo Branco has artistic and economic significance. Embroidery production is concentrated in the District of Castelo Branco; at the same time, Bordado is an enduring symbol of the city of Castelo Branco, where artisans continue to produce specialist embroidery. The Centro de Interpretação do Bordado comprises a museum, a shop and the Oficina-Escola de Bordado de Castelo Branco. It presents the history of Bordado, from sowing flax and weaving through silkworm farming and obtaining the raw material to the development of embroidery. Its techniques, historical context and symbolism are also covered. Those interested in the craft can thus learn about both its production history and its artistic and economic role.
Museu Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior in the municipality of Castelo Branco was founded in 1910 by the archaeologist whose name it bears. Casa da Memória da Presença Judaica commemorates the history of the Jewish people and of the former Jewish community that lived in the city and contributed significantly to its commercial and economic development. The two sites offer different ways to explore the city’s history and its former communities.
Music and regional exhibition themes round out this selection. The Viola Beiroa has been used in Lousa since the 17th century to accompany the Dança das Virgens and the Dança dos Homens. Museu do Canteiro presents various temporary exhibitions on stone throughout the year. Its Exposição de Presépios takes place every year during the Christmas season; check the dates before your trip.
Getting there and finding your way
