A ten-kilometre circular trail, a nature reserve associated with the Iberian lynx, and several historic buildings give Penamacor clearly distinct reasons to visit. The themes range from hiking, nature and local history to the winter Madeiro tradition. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a specific time of year for hiking, historic sights and an event held on a set date every year. This makes it easier to decide what you want to make your trip to Penamacor special.

Hiking the PR1-PNC

The PR1-PNC Rota da Vila circular trail is ten kilometres long and takes an average of three hours and 30 minutes. It is rated easy, difficulty level 2. These details give you a clear timeframe for a hike and help you plan it as a separate activity. The trail starts at the Museu Municipal and heads towards the “Miradouro da Casa do Ramalho” geosite and the Minas do Palão. The mines bear witness to lead mining in the mid-20th century. The route description thus combines a clearly defined hiking trail with references to geological and industrial history.

Serra da Malcata and the Iberian lynx

The Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata lies between Vila Penamacor and the town of Sabugal, on the border with Spain. It was established primarily to protect the Iberian lynx and is a natural habitat for the species. The lynx is also a subject at the Museu Municipal de Penamacor, where local wildlife is presented, including the Iberian lynx. The museum also displays an extensive archaeological collection and works of sacred art. This brings you face to face with nature and history in two different ways: as a habitat in the Reserva Natural and as part of a museum collection.

Buildings and history in town

Two historical dates stand out in the story of the Convento de Santo António. The monastery was founded in 1571 by the Capuchin friars of Penamacor. The church and cloister of the Convento were classified as a monument of public interest on 27 March 2020. The Teatro Clube de Penamacor also has a specific date in its history: it was inaugurated on 14 November 1912.

Other traces reveal different aspects of the townscape. The surviving remains of Castelo de Penamacor include the keep and the adjoining section of wall. The former town hall stands at the entrance to the old Vila, now Cimo de Vila, right beside a surviving section of wall. The Pelourinho retains its wrought-iron hooks and rings. The churches, in turn, each have their own architectural features: the Igreja da Misericórdia is in the Manueline style and has four side altars. The Igreja de São Tiago is the parish church of Penamacor; its construction is dated to the 16th century or earlier.

Madeiro: an annual December event

The highlight of the Madeiro tradition takes place on the night of 23 December, continuing into 24 December. The fire is then lit and burns until Epiphany. The tradition is organised by the Malta do Ano, a group of young people who turn twenty and were born in the municipality or have family roots there. The Madeiro gives a trip to Penamacor a clear seasonal focus. If this tradition is a deciding factor for you, plan your trip for this period and check the specific event information for the year you intend to travel.

Choose the right focus

The Jardim da República also offers a different view of Penamacor: it is a leafy public park with impressive panoramic views. Together with the walking trail, museum and historic buildings, it shows how you can shape your trip around different interests. That way, choosing a destination is about more than a single sight—it is about the focus that best suits your trip.
