The Percurso Vermelho is a mountain biking circuit through Pena Falcão; Poço do Moinho is a spot for seasonal swimming, while Penedo do Pico is a geological feature. The black p34 route also passes through the village. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the local routes and natural attractions from the wider range of options at the municipal level in Proença-a-Nova.
Mountain biking: circuit and black route
The municipal route information, updated in December 2023, describes the Percurso Vermelho as a mountain biking circuit starting and ending at the Centro de BTT. The route passes through Pena Falcão. It first follows the Ribeira de Pena Falcão and then the Ribeira Chão do Galego; it also passes by the Ribeira da Fróia.
The black p34 mountain biking route also passes through Pena Falcão. The cycling centre's route information, as of 2026, takes it past the river beaches of Fróia, Alvito da Beira and Cerejeira. Portas do Almourão is a notable point along the route. While cycling on p34, you may encounter resident griffon vultures.
The two descriptions offer different points of reference when choosing a route: the Percurso Vermelho focuses on the circuit and its start and finish point, while p34 highlights the named river beaches and Portas do Almourão. The information therefore differs in the route features it specifically identifies, without giving any walking or cycling time.
Summer at Poço do Moinho and geological features
Poço do Moinho is in Pena Falcão, next to the Lagar, and is a place to swim in summer. Swimming is seasonal. If you plan to swim during your stay, check the local conditions before visiting.
Penedo do Pico offers a different point of interest: a large, white monolith made of highly recrystallised metaquartzite. Its description links its visible size and colour with the geological classification of the rock. Alongside the routes and the seasonal swimming spot, it is a clearly identified geological feature.
Walking and the wider setting of Proença-a-Nova
The PR4 – Pela Linha da Defesa walking trail runs from Sobreira Formosa to Ponte do Alvito and is 14.5 km long. As a walking trail with two named endpoints, it differs from the mountain biking routes in its designated activity and stated length. Check the route information again locally before setting out on the walk.
At the municipal level, Proença-a-Nova is characterised by extensive woodland and agricultural land. These include olive groves and cherry trees, whose blossoms turn large areas white in spring. This seasonal view of the municipality complements the specific attractions of Pena Falcão with another perspective on the landscape.
Proença-a-Nova also has its own culinary traditions: local cuisine includes Maranhos, feijoadas, cured meats, goat's cheese and cavacas, as well as cakes made with honey and olive oil. Together with its woodland and agricultural land, these offer a broader perspective on the municipality, while the mountain biking routes, Poço do Moinho and Penedo do Pico are specific points of interest in Pena Falcão.
