Ponte do Cabril lies in a striking gorge on the Zêzere, between the dam of the same name and the new bridge. It stands out against the landscape. The town is on the left bank of the Zêzere, a few kilometres from Cabril Dam. Alongside the historic structures, the river and gorge are therefore central to what there is to discover.

For those interested in hiking, the Grande Rota do Zêzere, or GR33, offers a direct link to the landscape: one of its stages runs from Sra. da Confiança to Pedrógão Pequeno. This also places the town on a named hiking route. The gorge and the trail stage offer a different focus from the chapels and historic landmarks in the town.

Chapels bearing traces of different eras

Capela da Misericórdia is in the historic centre and was probably built as early as the 16th century. Two periods meet at Capela de Nossa Senhora da Confiança: the present building was constructed in 1902 on the ruins of an older chapel, whose origins, according to tradition, date back to the 16th century. It is therefore important to distinguish the construction date of the present chapel from the traditional account of its predecessor.

Capela de Santo António is in the oldest part of Pedrógão Pequeno, set among exposed granite rocks. It was built before 1730. Igreja Matriz also dates back to the early modern period: it was probably built in the mid-16th century and, according to historical accounts, was likely completed in 1587. Both dates are expressed cautiously, but they point to a long history of construction in the town.

Capela de São Sebastião tells a different story. Until 1892, it served as the place of worship for Pedrógão Pequeno’s former cemetery; afterwards, it fell into disrepair. In 1918, the Vidigal family rebuilt it with the support of the local population. Its history thus encompasses both its former cemetery function and its later reconstruction, supported by the community.

The museum: everyday life, crafts and medieval tombstones

At the Núcleo Museológico de Pedrógão Pequeno, the permanent exhibition Casa dos Saberes e Sabores brings traditional ways of life together with old crafts and local flavours. Another permanent exhibition displays Templar tombstones from the medieval necropolis of Pedrógão Pequeno. The museum thus brings together different aspects of the town’s history: everyday traditions and crafts alongside evidence from the Middle Ages. It is dedicated to preserving and presenting the historical, cultural and architectural heritage of this region.

Opening hours are as follows: Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Guided tours must be booked in advance. Check the opening hours before your trip, especially if you are planning a guided tour.

Pillory, mural and pilgrimage

The Pelourinho de Pedrógão Pequeno stands on a circular platform with three steps and has a smooth, cylindrical column. It was reconstructed in 1959. An earlier pillory, erected when the town was granted the status of Vila in 1448, was destroyed that same year. The two dates mark different stages in its history: the town’s early development and its later reconstruction.

A mural inaugurated on 24 June 2025 commemorates historic places and moments in the town, formerly known as «Sintra da Beira». The Nossa Senhora da Confiança pilgrimage is another cultural highlight: it lasts three days and includes a candlelit procession and fireworks. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates and programme in advance.

Whether you start with the buildings, the museum exhibitions or the Zêzere landscape, Pedrógão Pequeno offers different ways to explore its history and surroundings. The GR33 stage adds a hiking route to these discoveries, while the chapels and the Pelourinho each reveal their own historical details. You can shape your stay around the themes that interest you most, rather than viewing everything from a single perspective.
