Paul lies on the left bank of the Ribeira da Caia, a tributary of the ZĂŞzere. Its cultural and local history is reflected in various places and events: a medieval bridge, churches and a sanctuary, cultural and everyday-life venues, and the Santa Bebiana festival. Distinguishing between architectural and cultural history and a specific festival occasion is a helpful starting point for understanding Paul as a travel destination.

Cultural venues and everyday history

The Casa de Cultura José Marmelo e Silva was inaugurated in 2011. It includes a library with internet access, an exhibition room and a themed room recreating José Marmelo e Silva’s working environment. The library and exhibition room give the building distinct cultural functions; the themed room adds a specific connection to his working life. Alongside the historic buildings, there are also cultural offerings with different focuses.

Together, the Casa-Museu do Paul and the Taberna Típica present a vivid picture of a traditional house and the everyday routines of the town’s former residents. This perspective focuses on domestic life and daily routines, and differs from the library and exhibition focus of the Casa de Cultura.

Architectural history spanning different periods

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, matriz do Paul, was probably built in the late 17th or early 18th century. The medieval Ponte do Paúl over the Paúl River is considerably older: it was built in the 13th or 14th century. Its original form has been preserved, including stones bearing masons’ marks. The bridge thus combines a very early date with a specific detail of its preserved form, offering a different historical perspective from the matriz.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Dores was built in 1954, following a vow made in connection with the French Invasions. At this sanctuary, the year it was built is therefore linked to a religious occasion. The church, bridge and sanctuary represent different periods and connections: a probable date of origin, medieval architectural history, and a building associated with a vow.

Santa Bebiana and getting there

The Santa Bebiana festival in Paul was revived in 2005 after several decades of interruption. It is organized by the Casa do Povo do Paul. The festival keeps alive folk traditions associated with Jeropiga and mountain culture. Alongside architectural and religious history, the festival offers insight into local traditions of its own. If you would like to plan your trip around Santa Bebiana, check the festival dates in advance.

To get to Paul from CovilhĂŁ, take the EN230 towards Tortosendo, then turn left onto the EN343. Check the local road layout before travelling. This lets you plan your journey using the road sequence given and use the local cultural and historical themes as a guide during your stay.
