Orca can be explored through two distinctive themes: traditional cheese-making and the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira with its religious customs. The village also has buildings with their own local histories. If you are looking for a cultural focus for your stay, there are several ways to explore it: knowledge of cheese-making, annual celebrations and historic architecture.

Cheese-making and two different routes

Orca is closely associated with traditional cheese-making and the distinctive knowledge involved in its production. The Casa do Queijo was created to present the entire cheese-making process and its methods. The focus is therefore not just on the finished product: the production process and the knowledge passed down over time are also part of the story. The Casa do Queijo is part of the Casas e Lugares do Sentir cultural, tourism and educational route in the municipality of Fundão.

Another connection is the Roteiro da Pastorícia e do Queijo. It includes Orca alongside Três Povos and Soalheira in the Trígono do Queijo e da Pastorícia. The two route names have different emphases: Casas e Lugares do Sentir is described as a cultural, tourism and educational route, while the Roteiro focuses on pastoralism and cheese within the Trígono. Orca therefore brings both the cheese-making tradition and a thematic connection with the two other named places into view. This distinction can help with planning: the Casa do Queijo focuses on the production process and methods, while the Roteiro includes Orca together with Três Povos and Soalheira.

The chapel, celebrations and views of the landscape

A mass is celebrated at the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira every year on 2 February. After the mass, the offerings made by the faithful are auctioned outside the chapel at the “Ramo”. The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Orca also has a history spanning several decades. If you would like to plan your stay around the mass, check the date for your chosen year.

The chapel is considered one of the most important Marian shrines south of the Serra da Gardunha. From the chapel entrance, you can also see parts of Cova da Beira, as well as the Serra da Gardunha and the Serra da Estrela. This view connects the religious site with several named landscape areas. There is also an olive tree by the chapel, estimated to be 955 years old in October 2023. For the same tree, an average circumference at chest height of 531 cm, an average circumference at the base of 592 cm, and a trunk height of 130 cm were recorded; the possible margin of error is 2 percent. Its age is therefore an estimate, not an exact figure.

Architectural history and names in the village

The Igreja Matriz de Orca, also known as the Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, was built in the 16th century. Opposite the parish church stands the Casa Grande, also called Casa da Orca. Its position in the village reflects the importance of the family who had it built. These alternative names are useful when exploring Orca’s architectural history: the church has two names, as does the building opposite, with its own name and alternative designation.

Another historical landmark is the Ponte Romana da Ribeira do Taveiró, a bridge described as “Roman”, between Orca and São Miguel de Acha. Together, the church, Casa Grande and bridge provide different points of reference for exploring Orca through its religious history, urban significance and named historic buildings.

When looking for a holiday rental in Orca, start with the reason for your visit: would you like to plan your stay around the mass celebrated every year on 2 February, or are cheese-making and architectural history your main interests? These priorities can help shape your choice of travel dates and the character of your stay.
