Gorge and Visible Geological History
The Portas de Almourão lie between the Aldeia de Xisto da Foz do Cobrão in Vila Velha de Ródão and Sobral Fernando in Proença-a-Nova, forming the gorge of the Rio Ocreza. The geological formation was created by the action of the river: its waters cut through the imposing quartzite cliffs. Those interested in how the landscape was formed will find another clue in Foz do Cobrão: rocks around 500 million years old can be seen there, with wave structures and fossils from an ocean that no longer exists. The gorge and the rocks offer different views of the landscape—one of cliffs shaped by the river, the other of traces preserved in ancient rock.
The PR3 along the Rio Ocreza
The PR3 Caminho do Xisto da Foz do Cobrão is an 11.3-kilometre circular trail that can be walked in either direction. This means you can choose which way to go; the stated length of the circular trail remains the same. Along the banks of the Rio Ocreza, the trail runs past quartzite cliffs. During the walk, griffon vultures in flight and otters in the river can often be spotted. The route thus brings together riverbanks and rock formations with the chance to see two very different animal species.
The starting point is near the Igreja da Foz do Cobrão. There are parking facilities and toilets there, as well as a restaurant in the village and a viewpoint overlooking the Rio Ocreza. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information on parking, toilets and the restaurant before setting out. The ensemble of watermills is also among the PR3’s attractions. It is another specific point of interest along the circular trail, alongside the river, cliffs and potential wildlife sightings.
More water and culture
The Foz do Cobrão bathing area is on the banks of the Ribeira do Cobrão in the Aldeia de Xisto da Foz do Cobrão, in the municipality of Vila Velha de Ródão. It includes a river swimming area created for recreational use. The PR3, by contrast, follows the Rio Ocreza: the two waterways therefore represent different focuses—here, the trail along the riverbank and cliffs; there, the bathing area with its purpose-built river swimming spot.
The Núcleo Museológico do Linho e da Tecelagem offers a cultural counterpoint to the geology and landscape. It is located in the Centro de Interpretação of the Aldeia de Xisto da Foz do Cobrão, in the municipality of Vila Velha de Ródão. The museum presents the history of linen and weaving, activities that shape the identity of this freguesia. It thus brings another side of the place into view: not the formation of the gorge, but the importance of textile work to local identity.
Gold panning is also part of Foz do Cobrão’s tradition. Together with linen and weaving, this cultural theme broadens the focus beyond the landscape without displacing the trail as the main attraction. When weighing up options for a stay, visitors can distinguish between a hike along the Rio Ocreza, the bathing area on the Ribeira do Cobrão and the village’s cultural attractions.
