A historic Roman road ran through Escalos De Baixo, linking Idanha-a-Velha, Escalos, Castelo Branco, Tomar, and Lisbon. This historic connection is a distinctive gateway to the area’s past. Another archaeological feature is Tapada do Poço, designated as an open-air archaeological site.

Archaeological Traces Between the Village and the River

Between Munheca and Belgais, the landscape along the Ponsul bears archaeological traces of gold mining dating from the period of Romanization. A parish record from 1758 reports that gold was extracted from the sands at the mouth of the Ribeira dos Escalos, also known as Ribeiro da Ribeirinha. Thus, evidence from different periods can be found side by side: archaeological traces in a named stretch of the Ponsul and a later account of gold extraction at a stream mouth.

There are rock carvings at Monte de S. LuĂs. They are considered vague indications that people may have settled there in prehistoric and early historic times. There are also reports of graves on the hill, and various bird species can be observed there. A few kilometres from Escalos De Baixo lies Casa dos Mouros in the Barroca do Galhardo gorge. It is considered a further historical indication of early settlement in the area.

Bridges and Riverside Scenery

Ponte da Munheca was built in the second half of the 19th century. It stands over an older bridge, which may be Roman. Along the Ponsul are stretches of riverside scenery of remarkable natural beauty, especially around Ponte da Moinheca. The history of the structures and the river landscape offer different ways to discover the area’s history and scenery.

Art and Music at Belgais

The Centro de Arte de Belgais is located on a restored estate with traditional architecture and provides a space for artistic and cultural projects. Since the early 2000s, Belgais has hosted dozens of workshops, as well as conferences, concerts, and performances. The independently produced opera “Dido and Aeneas” is also part of its programme history.

Belgais offers three-day musical stays that combine time in nature with musical activities. These stays include guided walks through the surrounding countryside, with insights into local flora and olive groves, as well as archaeological tours. Music, nature, and archaeological themes come together as part of these stays.

Village Centre, Crafts, and Cuisine

In the old village centre, chapels and the Igreja Matriz are part of the village’s religious heritage. Local craft traditions include Castelo Branco-style embroidery, patchwork quilts, linen blankets, and woodwork. Alongside the archaeological evidence, these diverse traditions add further facets to the area’s cultural identity.

Local cuisine includes enchidos, ensopado de cabrito, tigelada, bolo de mel, bicas, and borrachões. The cuisine brings together hearty dishes and a variety of sweet pastries and specialities. Together with the craft traditions mentioned above, it offers a distinctive perspective on local culture, beyond the historic buildings and archaeological sites.

Springs and a Christmas Tradition

The small thermal springs of Fonte Santa de S. LuĂs have been mentioned since the early 19th century. Their waters were historically believed to be beneficial in treating skin conditions. This traditional account describes a historical belief, not a current medical recommendation.

The collection of the Madeiro is also one of Escalos De Baixo’s deeply rooted Christmas traditions: the wood is meant to warm the infant Jesus on Christmas night. The tradition was revived in December 2024, when plans were made to continue it.
