Casegas lies in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela. The town offers different points of interest to help you plan your trip: religious heritage, local history, a biographical museum and waterside spots. This lets you decide which aspect of Casegas interests you most, rather than building your stay around just one attraction.

Churches and Local History

The parish church is the most significant example of the town’s religious heritage. Dedicated to São Pedro, it was built in 1933–1934. If you are interested in religious and architectural history, the church is a clear focal point; the town’s chapels offer further historical connections.

Casa Museu Monsenhor Alves Brás offers a biographical perspective. It spans three floors, each presenting memories and experiences from the life of Monsenhor Alves Brás. Museu de Arte Sacra (Igreja) is another cultural point of interest in Casegas. The two museums have different thematic focuses: one on a person’s life story, the other on sacred art.

Historical accounts of Casegas mention a chapel dedicated to SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo. Capela do Anjo da Guarda was added in the second half of the 20th century. The chapel popularly known in Casegas as Capela das Almas is thought to be the same as the former ermida do Santo Cristo. This historical connection is therefore a probable, not certain, identification.

Waterside Spots and Nature

Local attractions include Ribeira do Porsim. Casegas is also home to Parque Fluvial do Lameiro da Ribeira; there are natural swimming pools along the stream near Casegas. This gives you several waterside options, from the named Ribeira to a riverside park and natural pools. If you plan to visit the riverside park or the swimming pools, check current access conditions before your visit.

A Historic Trade Route

According to Mário Saa, the Via Covillianae, a Roman road connecting Idanha and Covilhã with Tomar, ran through Casegas. It facilitated trade in wool, coal, olive oil and salt. This account places Casegas within an earlier transport and trade network, adding another historical perspective to the churches and chapels.

Community, Cuisine and Events

The Forno Comunitário de Casegas was renovated in 2019 and made available to the community. Traditional cakes were baked there and typical roasts prepared for village festivals. The communal oven is thus linked to a specific festive tradition, not merely a physical feature of the town.

“Sons da Fraga Dura” also brings traditional music and gastronomy together. The festival’s tenth edition was held in Casegas in 2019, organised by Casa do Povo de Casegas. The town’s cuisine was showcased, including Brulhões, Feijão com couve and Chanfana. BFC Brass Fest took place in Casegas in 2023. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the latest dates in advance.

Planning Your Trip

A simple way to plan is to decide what interests you most: churches and local history, the life of Monsenhor Alves Brás, or the waterside spots. This helps you organise the topics without assuming a fixed order for your visit. When looking for a hotel in Casegas, you can also consider which focus you want to shape your stay.
