São Vicente da Beira combines a clearly defined historical heritage with several specific dates throughout the year. The pillory, hermitage and surviving portals of the former Franciscan convent represent different architectural connections; markets and festivals provide their own dates. This makes it possible to explore the destination both through its local history and by choosing a preferred travel period.

Historical Heritage from Different Periods

The Pelourinho de São Vicente da Beira stands on three circular steps; its shaft is octagonal. The circular steps and octagonal shaft create a striking contrast in form. The combination of a circular stepped base and an octagonal shaft makes the monument’s shape easy to appreciate.

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Orada de São Vicente da Beira was probably built around 1400, possibly in the final years of the 14th century. This dating points to the transition from the late 14th to the early 15th century, but remains a cautious estimate. The town’s historical heritage is also connected with administration by the Order of Avis from the 13th to the 15th century. Together, these details place the local architectural and administrative history within a longer medieval period.

Only two portals survive from the former Franciscan convent. They complement the other architectural features with tangible evidence of a former convent.

Crafts and Dates Throughout the Year

Local craft traditions include weaving cloaks and rugs, as well as various forms of lacework. This adds a craft dimension to the town’s cultural appeal alongside its buildings: the examples mentioned range from cloaks and rugs to lacework.

The annual markets take place on the third Sunday in January and the third Saturday in September. The Feira de Artesanato e Gastronomia Estrela Sul takes place in June. The Festa de Santo Cristo falls on the third Monday in September. The events mentioned are therefore spread across January, June and September; in September, two different date patterns coincide: the market on Saturday and the Festa on Monday. If a market or festival is the deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates for the year you plan to travel.

Location and Route Status

São Vicente da Beira lies at the foot of the Serra da Gardunha, at an altitude of around 700 metres. Its mountain setting and approximate elevation provide a clear geographical picture of the town.

The PR10 CTB – Rota da Sr.ª da Orada starts in the square in the historic centre. On 4 September 2026, the route was temporarily closed for rehabilitation work to improve conditions for use and safety. Check its current status before planning to take the route.
