Cabanas de Baixo is a small village close to Foz do Sabor. Two distinct nature-related experiences are available nearby: watersports and leisure activities on the river, and birdwatching in the Serra do Reboredo. Torre de Moncorvo, meanwhile, offers cultural history to explore through routes, churches and museums.

Water and nature nearby

Praia Fluvial da Foz do Sabor offers opportunities for watersports and leisure activities at the confluence of the Sabor and Douro rivers. Those interested in the landscape from a wildlife-watching perspective can find two wooden birdwatching hides in the Serra do Reboredo. They blend into the natural surroundings so as not to disturb the animals that live there. This means that activities on the water and a closer look at wildlife appeal to different interests.

If you are planning a visit to Praia Fluvial, check the current access conditions in advance. You can choose activities based on whether you are mainly looking for watersports or leisure at the confluence; the birdwatching hides offer a different focus.

Cultural history in Torre de Moncorvo

Two routes start at the Loja Interativa de Turismo. The Rota do Património Histórico passes through the historic centre of Torre de Moncorvo. Along the way, the Rota dos Judeus explores both the tangible and intangible Jewish heritage. The routes therefore differ mainly in their themes: one leads through the historic town centre, while the other focuses on Jewish heritage.

A striking building is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, Torre de Moncorvo's Igreja Matriz. It was completed at the beginning of the 17th century. Its Renaissance portal is topped by three tiers of Corinthian columns, forming several niches.

The Museu de Arte Sacra presents the exhibition “Arte e Fé em Torre de Moncorvo”, featuring some of the works from the Igreja Matriz and the Igreja da Misericórdia de Torre de Moncorvo. As exhibition details may change, it is best to check them in advance if you are planning a visit. This is distinct from the collection at the Igreja Matriz itself, which comprises 94 items in the fields of sculpture, painting, liturgical vestments and objects, goldsmithing, and printed books.

Archaeology, industry and Jewish heritage

The Museu do Castelo de Torre de Moncorvo is an interpretive and educational centre for the castle ruins and the archaeological work carried out there. It preserves structures, materials and information gathered between 1988 and 2018 during work on the medieval castle, including at the Alcáçova and the weapons courtyard. The name “Castelo” refers in particular to the rectangular area above Praça Francisco Meireles, enclosed by strong granite walls.

The Museu do Ferro & da Região de Moncorvo focuses on the archaeological and industrial heritage of the places and communities around the Serra do Reboredo and Vale da Vilariça. A particular focus is on activities associated with iron mining. The Núcleo Museológico da Fotografia do Douro Superior has a different emphasis: its collection comprises around 100,000 photographs, with images dating from 1894 onwards.

The Centro de Estudos Judaicos Maria da Assunção Carqueja e Adriano Vasco Rodrigues is an interpretive and educational centre for Jewish history and culture. Its two locations include a house on Rua Nova, which according to tradition was the synagogue. Another house on Avenida Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco is traditionally associated with the Inquisition.

Another historical display is on the first floor of Casa da Roda. It recreates a period setting in which the “rodeira” and the “rodeiro” received children. This complements the institutional and architectural themes with a tangible insight into the role of these two people at the time.
