In Torre de Moncorvo, historic architecture and the town’s history meet almond groves, lakes and regional specialities. You can plan your trip around different interests: a walk through the historic centre, a visit during the almond blossom season or excursions around the Lagos do Sabor.
Historic Centre and Architecture
The Rota do Património Histórico starts at the Loja Interativa de Turismo and leads through the historic centre of Torre de Moncorvo. The route is 1.6 kilometres long; it takes about an hour on foot and is rated as easy. Local conditions may change. At the Porta da Traição, you can see battlements and a section of the rampart walk along the castle wall.
The Igreja Matriz de Torre de Moncorvo is classified as a National Monument. Its distinctive features include the tower and Renaissance portal. Inside, the church follows the hall church layout: the five bays of the naves are vaulted at the same height. The Igreja da Misericórdia has a Renaissance-style façade and a Baroque gilded high altar in its main chapel.
The town’s history can also be traced through specific places. The Casa da Roda dos Expostos bears the date 1785 and preserves the former foundling wheel, where abandoned infants could be left anonymously. At the Museu do Castelo, you can see archaeological ceramics, faience, metal objects, coins, glass and animal bones, as well as a model of the castle. The Museu de Arte Sacra is housed in the Igreja da Misericórdia. Its religious art comes from this church and the Igreja Matriz and includes works from the 16th to the 20th century. The Museu do Ferro focuses on the mining industry developed in the 19th century at one of the country’s largest iron ore deposits.
Almond Blossom, Oak Woodland and Lakes
The Rota das Amendoeiras passes through almond groves that are covered in white and pink blossoms in February and March. The flowering period may vary slightly. If you want to make the landscape part of your trip planning, you can contrast this seasonal highlight with the historic walking route, which is described as available year-round.
Another place to experience the landscape is the PerĂmetro Florestal da Serra do Reboredo, home to the largest oak woodland in northeastern Trás-os-Montes. The Miradouro da Fraga do CĂŁo offers views across the lakes. Three lakes lie within the Lagos do Sabor area: Cilhades, dos Santuários and Medal. The Lagos do Sabor are a place for relaxation and nature adventures. At a river landing, small boats travelling along the Douro can dock to explore the Sabor Lakes area.
Praia Fluvial da Foz do Sabor offers opportunities for water sports and leisure activities. The site includes a mooring area and a jetty, support facilities, a picnic park and parking. If you plan to visit, check the current status of the facilities in advance.
Regional Speciality and Trip Planning
Amêndoa Coberta de Moncorvo is a regional confectionery speciality made from peeled, roasted sweet almonds coated in a sugar paste. There are three varieties: white, or classic; brown, or chocolate; and “peladinhas”. In making them, specialist producers known as “cobrideiras” coat the almonds repeatedly with sugar syrup. The Vinho Sabor Douro Festival showcases wine production in Torre de Moncorvo and its region; exact event dates may vary.
These options also differ in how they fit into your schedule: the historic walk is a clearly defined route on foot, while the almond blossom makes for a seasonal visit.
