Vagos combines the Atlantic coast, woodland and Ria landscapes, and offers extensive sandy beaches. Alongside coastal and nature experiences, there are walking trails, historic mills, churches, crafts and Moliceiro boat trips. Each beach and route has its own focus.
Beaches, woodland and water
Praia da Vagueira is a vast sandy beach associated with artisanal fishing. Praia do AreĂŁo is largely undeveloped and surrounded by dunes. You can walk and observe wildlife in the adjacent Mata. Praia do Labrego offers good surfing conditions.
At Marina da Praia da Vagueira, a ramp leads to a sandy beach suited to canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and rowing. The marina also has 14 berths for boats up to 20 metres long, with a draft of less than 2.5 metres. On a Moliceiro boat trip with “Os Violas”, the route passes through the Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation of the Ria de Aveiro in the Natura 2000 network. The boat travels along the Rio Boco and docks at Ponte de Fareja.
Walking trails with different highlights
The PR4 – Trilho das Levadas das Azenhas do Boco is a 4 km circular trail along the levadas of Boco, passing mills and watermills. Possible starting points are Capela do Boco or Parque de Merendas do Boco. Native woodland vegetation includes alders, ash trees, laurels and oaks. Bird species include, among others, goshawks, sparrowhawks, nightjars, purple herons, marsh harriers and little terns.
The PR3 – Percurso Natura Rio Boco is 6.3 km long and linear. It lies within the Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation of the Ria de Aveiro in the Natura 2000 network. The route follows the Rio Boco, crosses Parque Municipal Quinta do Ega and uses the Fareja footbridge to cross the river.
The PR2 VGS – Trilho de São Martinho is an approximately 19 km circular trail along woodland and agricultural paths. Along the way, it passes the sparkling wine vineyards of Quinta da Pedreira and ends at Parque das Azenhas, where visitors can learn how historic watermills work. The PR1 – Trilho da Lontra is 8.3 km long and lies in the area of Lagoa do Moitão and Lagoa da Jincosa. Among the trails described, the PR4 is the shorter loop at 4 km; the PR3 is longer at 6.3 km and linear, while the PR2 covers approximately 19 km as a circular route. Their lengths and layouts differ, but on their own they do not indicate the level of difficulty. Route details may change due to maintenance work; check the conditions before your walk.
Mills and cultural heritage
In Boco, Azenha da Fonte is one of two watermills still in operation. At Azenha Ti LuĂsa, the milling process is explained and flour milling is demonstrated. Azenha Barreto preserves a historic interior with a mill, a miller's room and a kitchen. The Moinho de Vento de Santo AntĂłnio de Vagos is a different type of structure: this rotating wooden windmill is of the Gandara type and is one of the few windmills still in operation in the Aveiro district. The Moinhos de Vento de SĂŁo RomĂŁo represent the historic relationship of the Vagos community with grain milling and rice hulling.
Moinho GiratĂłrio de Vento Ti Pascoal is located by Lagoa de CalvĂŁo. There are two picnic areas, a short walking path around the lagoon and a bridge for observing nature. The Festival dos Moinhos de Portugal includes a family event where visitors can observe the flora and fauna of Lagoa de CalvĂŁo.
Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Vagos dates back to the early period of Portuguese nationhood. It was remodelled in the 19th century and retains elements from the 17th century. Processions and pilgrimages take place there on Whit Monday; the exact date varies from year to year. Igreja Paroquial de São Tiago de Vagos was dedicated to the Apostle James by 1220 at the latest and stood on the coastal pilgrimage route to Compostela.
Crafts, festivals and regional cuisine
Vagos's craft traditions include ceramics and the making of wickerwork, mats and miniature mills. Caldeirada de enguias, an eel stew, is considered an emblematic local dish. Museu do Brincar invites visitors to experience the exhibition and interact with the museum space.
The Festival do Moliceiro has been held in Vagos since 1984. Its programme includes a procession of traditional Moliceiro boats on the Rio Boco and a re-enactment of the traditional auction of moliço and reeds. Check the dates and programme for the relevant edition before visiting.
