Praia do Areão is located in Gafanha da Boa Hora. Its surroundings have largely been preserved in their natural state; the dune system retains its natural structure and vegetation. Boardwalks make it easier to access the extensive beach while also protecting the fragile dune vegetation from being trampled. This is a place where you can enjoy both the beach and a natural landscape.

Dunes, Walks and Birdwatching

In addition to Praia do Areão, the Mata is suitable for walks. Among other things, you may spot kites, grey herons, foxes and otters. The Circuito Ambiental da Gafanha da Boa Hora project created accessible circular trails between Praia do Areão, Praia da Vagueira and Canal de Mira.

Another focus for nature observation is Canal de Mira. Along its banks, mudflats and tidal flats, together with neighbouring agricultural fields, offer opportunities to observe numerous priority bird species listed in the Birds Directive. The area lies within the Natura 2000 protected area ZPE Ria de Aveiro. Birdwatchers will find different conditions here than in the Mata next to Areão: there, walks and the animals mentioned above are the main attractions, while at the Canal the focus is on wetlands and fields.

Fishing, the Market and Surfing

At Praia da Vagueira, fishermen still use the wide sandy beach for traditional fishing. In the past, oxen hauled the fish-laden nets ashore; today, tractors do the job. The catch from the traditional Arte Xávega fishery is unloaded on the beach and sold very fresh at the fish stalls in the fish market opposite. If you plan to visit the market, check what is currently on offer before your trip.

There are also two suitable coastal spots for a surfing visit: the lively sea at Praia da Vagueira is good for surfing, and Praia do Labrego offers good conditions too. There are surf schools near Labrego. A small water park suitable for children is also located near Praia do Labrego. Operators and facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

Church, Events and Practical Planning

The parish church of Gafanha da Boa Hora features post-conciliar modernist architecture, based on a design by architect Augusto dos Santos Malta. It was built in 1972 and inaugurated on 22 July 1984. Its furnishings include a 19th-century wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and a polychrome clay statue of Saint Thomas. This was made by Pedro Serrano, a potter from Aveiro.

The Feira dos Cinco takes place in Gafanha da Boa Hora on the fifth day of every month. Check the dates before your trip. Parque Infantil da Praia da Vagueira is also open to tourists and occasional visitors; if you plan to visit, you can check its condition on site.

A free weekday municipal bus service is documented for summer 2026, connecting Vagueira, Labrego and Areão from 6 July to 28 August. For travel dates after this period, check a current municipal notice before planning a bus journey.
