The Gothic parish church of the Transfiguration and a cycling route that passes through Żukowo reveal two different sides of the village. Its history, places of remembrance and a linden avenue designated as a natural monument add further perspectives. Żukowo can thus be understood through clearly distinct themes: church architecture, commemoration, protected landscape and cycling.

Local history and historical figures

Żukowo was founded around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries; its first recorded mention dates to 1363. These dates mark different points of reference: the founding period places the beginnings in context, while 1363 marks the first recorded mention. This distinction is useful for understanding the village’s chronology, since its origins and its first written mention are not the same thing. Another historical thread leads to Heinrich von Podewils. He was born in Żukowo and served as finance minister at the courts of Frederick William I and Frederick the Great of Prussia. Alongside the village’s long chronology, this brings into focus the biography of a specific person whose political career was connected with the Prussian courts.

Parish church and furnishings

The Gothic parish church of the Transfiguration offers a glimpse into another aspect of local history. After the war, it was handed over to the Catholics; it was consecrated on 7 April 1946. Its furnishings include an altar and a pulpit; the organs date from around 1700. Its style, consecration and furnishings point to different aspects and periods.

Lapidarium and cemetery chapel

Żukowo’s lapidarium contains several gravestones belonging to former residents. It includes a commemorative plaque mounted on a granite boulder. The plaque commemorates Polish and German people who died and found their final resting place in this cemetery, having belonged to the former German parish of Żukowo; it bears the dates 1945–1995. Alongside the church architecture, the lapidarium offers a distinct perspective on local commemoration.

A chapel was built in the 1930s in Żukowo’s new Protestant cemetery, about 50 metres west of the church. The period and location help place this historic building in context and complement the village’s other church-history themes.

Linden avenue and cycling route

A natural feature is also specifically identified: the linden avenue in Żukowo is among the natural monuments in the “Jezioro Łętowskie oraz okolice Kępic” protected landscape area. This places a protected landscape feature alongside the village’s historical and commemorative themes.

The Sławieński Cycling Route passes through Żukowo: from Pomiłowo via Gwiazdowo and Żukowo, then through Janiewice to Łętowo. The route covers about 25 kilometres in total, including roads, forest tracks, paths and routes suitable for cyclists. It therefore includes different types of paths. If you plan to follow it, check current route conditions before setting out.

When looking for a holiday apartment, a simple way to choose is to consider what matters more: should local and church history shape your stay, or the cycling route? The linden avenue adds a nature-focused dimension. This can help you decide which aspects of Żukowo you want to explore on your trip.
