Sławno at the Confluence
Sławno lies where the Moszczenica flows into the Wieprza. The county town is located on the Słupsk Plain in the northeastern part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The river mouth and plain provide a clear geographical framework for finding your way around; churches, collections and routes offer different ways to explore the city.
The history of the railway is also part of these discoveries: Sławno railway station is in the western part of the city and was built in the 1860s. As a historic building, it points to a different era from the medieval churches that make the town’s cultural heritage visible.
Churches from Different Centuries
The Mariacki Church was built between 1326 and 1364, funded by Duchess Zofia, wife of Barnim IV. It is currently in use and administered by the Catholic parish of pw. W.N.M.P. If you are planning to visit the interior, it is advisable to check visiting arrangements in advance.
The Church of St Anthony of Padua was built between 1925 and 1928 to plans by Sławno architect Fridrich Suhr. Its construction was initiated by the first parish priest of the Catholic curacy, Father Franciszek Niering. Its furnishings include a 16th-century Renaissance triptych from the workshop of Frankfurt sculptor Schnitzer. It depicts five scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
The two churches therefore offer a concrete comparison across time: the Mariacki dates from the Middle Ages, while the Church of St Anthony was built in the 1920s. At the same time, the triptych in the newer church is older than the building itself—a distinct historical connection within the structure.
Regional History in Collections
The Sławno Lapidarium is a collection of preserved graves dating from before 1945. It is also evidence of the continuity of the cultural heritage of the Sławno region. Here, the focus is on historic gravesites and their connection to the region’s cultural heritage.
The Izba Muzealna was established in the cultural centre building at Cieszkowskiego 2. It was intended to promote regional history and commemorate the 700th anniversary of the granting of town rights. While the lapidarium brings together gravesites from before 1945, the Izba Muzealna has its own focus on sharing regional history.
Cultural Routes and Getting Around
The European Route of Brick Gothic passes through Sławno. It connects countries, regions, cities, cultures and people through a shared language: architecture. For those interested in architecture, the route places Sławno in a broader cultural context without replacing the focus on the city’s buildings and history.
Two hiking trails also pass through Sławno: the Pomeranian Way of St James and a blue trail. In addition, nearly three kilometres of cycle paths encircle the city. The routes offer different ways to get around: the hiking trails pass through Sławno, while the cycle paths go around the city. Trail markings and conditions may change, as may conditions on the cycle paths. Check the latest information before setting out.
Cultural Events and Getting There
Sławno holds several events annually on fixed dates, including the Festival of Wind Orchestras, a regional event celebrating the city’s cultural heritage. The International Święców Day, with its Fair of Many Cultures, is also held annually on fixed dates. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates and programme for the year you plan to visit.
National Road 6 passes through Sławno and connects Szczecin with Gdańsk. Direct rail services run to Warszawa, Szczecin, Gdańsk, Poznań and Kraków. It is worth checking the current timetable when planning your trip; check the road route before setting off. This makes it possible to plan your journey and explore the city based on specific cultural offerings and routes.
