Pyrzyce offers several distinct points of cultural and historical interest: fragments of the town fortifications, churches dating from the 13th century and places of remembrance reveal different aspects of the town’s history. This picture is complemented by the town library in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, a religious tradition and the International Festival. When planning a stay, this raises a practical choice: should the focus be on the medieval fortifications, the churches and places of remembrance, or leisure activities?

Town fortifications: medieval origins, fragmentary remains

Construction of the town walls began in the 13th century; the lower stone section dates from that period. The walls are up to 7–9 m high. Today, the ramparts and town ditches survive only in fragments; the best-preserved sections are in the south and east of the town. This makes it possible to view the fortifications across two periods: their medieval beginnings and their fragmentary condition today.

Churches and architectural history

The church on ul. Staromiejska was built around 1260 as a monastery church of the Augustinian order. The Gothic church on ul. 1 Maja was built in the second half of the 13th century and was later remodelled and extended. The two building histories have different emphases: the original function of the first as an order’s church is specified, while the later changes to the second are explicitly part of its history. Anyone wishing to understand both churches in their cultural and historical context can therefore consider not only their age, but also the historical period each represents.

Chapel, library and civic memory

Since 1969, the town library has been housed in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, where it collects items commemorating Pyrzyce’s past. The combination of chapel, library and collection distinguishes this place from the churches, where the focus is on architectural history: here, civic memory is an additional theme in its own right.

Tradition and cultural heritage

The Fountain of Saint Otto commemorates the baptism of Pyrzyce’s residents. According to tradition, Otto of Bamberg baptised residents of the town there during his missionary journey in 1124. At this place of remembrance, the focus is therefore not on the development of a building, but on a religious story passed down through tradition.

The International Festival “Pyrzyckie Spotkania z Folklorem” is also part of Pyrzyce’s traditions. The retrospective in the municipal strategy published in 2025 goes back to 2024; it records that the festival had promoted folk culture and traditional culture for over 40 years. This historical link to tradition adds a distinct cultural theme to the town’s architectural and commemorative history.

A different focus: mini graduation towers

The “Pyrzycka mini tężnia solankowa” mini graduation tower complex offers a different focus from the historic sites. It is located right next to the cycle path and not far from Geotermia Pyrzyce Spółka z o.o. Leisure facilities are therefore another possible theme for a stay in Pyrzyce. If you take both culture and leisure into account when choosing your destination, you can consider this as a separate element alongside the churches, town fortifications and places of remembrance.
