The city’s history, a marked hiking trail between two lakes and cultural attractions in the center give a stay in Szczytno a range of possible focuses. The Muzeum Mazurskie traces the story from prehistory to the present in its permanent exhibition; the Mazursko–Kurpiowski hiking trail crosses a bridge over the channel between Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe. Other attractions include the ruins of the Teutonic Order castle, the park named after Krzysztof Klenczon and the annual Festiwal Dni i Noce Szczytna.
History at the Museum and Castle
Since July 5, 2019, the Muzeum Mazurskie in Szczytno has presented a permanent exhibition on the history of the city and its surrounding area. It spans the period from prehistory to the present. This gives you the opportunity to explore the city and its surroundings together through their history.
At the ruins of the Teutonic Order castle, visitors can operate multimedia devices themselves to access information tailored to their interests. The devices are also adapted to the habits and perceptions of young people. They thus offer a different way to engage with history than the permanent exhibition, with its broad historical scope.
The castle’s north wing is intended to house rooms on two levels for exhibition openings, as well as permanent or temporary exhibitions on history and contemporary local art. The exhibition rooms are designed for year-round use. Szczytno’s tourist information office is located in the castle’s exhibition hall, which is intended for year-round use. If you would like to visit a specific exhibition, check the latest visitor information in advance.
The Hiking Trail Between the Lakes
The yellow-marked Mazursko–Kurpiowski hiking trail starts at the Muzeum Mazurskie, by the ruins of the Teutonic Order castle in Szczytno. In the city, it crosses a bridge over the channel between Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe lakes. The trail ends on Konopnicka Street, where the historic Chata Mazurska stands; it dates from the mid-19th century.
The starting point, the crossing between the lakes and the historic house at the end of the route provide clearly identified landmarks. Lake Domowe Małe offers another specific point of interest in the city: it is close to the center and covers 11.4 hectares. These places along the route highlight both the trail’s course and a lake with a precisely stated area.
Cultural Attractions and the City Festival
In central Szczytno, there is a park named after the musician Krzysztof Klenczon. It features a monument to him and a fountain. The park therefore connects a central spot in the city with a specific musical tribute.
Festiwal Dni i Noce Szczytna is an annual city festival. In terms of timing, it differs from the exhibition rooms, which are designed for year-round use: the festival is a recurring event, so check the specific dates in advance if you are planning your trip around it.
When choosing a focus for your visit, the clearest differences are the subject and timing: the museum and castle offer different ways to explore the city’s history, while the hiking trail leads between the lakes and the historic Chata Mazurska. The park and city festival add a local cultural dimension to these options.
