In Szczytno, the lakes and castle ruins take center stage, while Szczycieński County offers forest trails, large bodies of water and water routes. When planning, you can choose between destinations in the town and excursions elsewhere in the county.
Szczytno: Lakes and Castle Ruins
Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe are located in the center of Szczytno. Domowe Małe covers about five hectares; Domowe Duże, also called Długie, covers 51 hectares and is connected to Domowe Małe. A town beach lies on the larger of the two central lakes. These details clearly distinguish the two bodies of water without confusing their names.
The permanent ruins of the castle feature multimedia devices that visitors can operate themselves. They provide personalized information about the town, the castle and the region. So in Szczytno, alongside the lakes, you can also visit a cultural attraction offering information on several topics.
A 2016 tourist description mentions a sandy town beach and a beach volleyball court at the lakes in Szczytno. It also mentions a lit pier with benches and tables at the eastern end of a lakeshore, as well as a landing stage at the beach. Check which of these facilities are currently available before visiting. A sports center by the lake offered seasonal rentals of pedal boats, kayaks and sailboats; check current availability if you plan to take part in any of these activities.
Forests and Waters in Szczycieński County
The county has hundreds of kilometers of marked trails through its forests. There are also forest educational trails maintained by the Szczytno, Korpele, Jedwabno and Spychowo forest districts. Check locally whether the trails are open before making plans; routes may change. The seasons shape what the forests have to offer: in summer, there are shady areas and access to forest waters. In autumn, the forests attract mushroom pickers from across the country; in winter, they become cross-country skiing routes.
The waters also vary in their surrounding landscapes. Sasek Wielki is the largest lake in Szczycieński County. It is long and channel-shaped, and surrounded by wooded hills. On the eastern edge of the county, the first calm stretches of the Krutynia wind through the area, including near Spychowo. The county thus offers both a large lake with a distinctive shape and setting and a river route with a specific regional connection.
Choose Cycling and Kayaking Routes by Their Course
The Szczytno–Dźwierzuty–Biskupiec cycling route is about 42 kilometers long and paved. It extends beyond the county. Another cycling route in the county is “Rowerem po kolei,” which follows the former railway line No. 262. The two routes can be distinguished by their descriptions: one is named after several towns and described by its length and surface, while the other follows a former railway line. Check the route conditions before setting out.
The Omulew kayaking route begins at Lake Omulew in Nidzica Municipality, outside the county. It runs through Jedwabno Municipality and then crosses into Wielbark Municipality. On the Sawica, the nature of the river is particularly important: the kayaking route is considered difficult due to numerous obstacles, especially fallen trees, a stronger current and many bends. Actual water conditions can vary, so check them before setting out.
Find Hotels to Suit Your Travel Interests
When looking for a hotel, first decide what you want to focus on: Szczytno, with its central lakes and castle ruins, or activities elsewhere in the county. For a specific cycling or kayaking trip, the route, season and current conditions are also important.
