Spychowo lies on the eastern edge of the Puszcza Piska and on Jezioro Spychowskie. There are several ways to explore the area, including joining the Krutynia kayaking route, following a lakeside nature trail, cycling a loop route, and visiting historic sites in the village and nearby. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between the different options: the water route has a specific launch point, while the nature trail is notable for its paths and facilities.

Krutynia: Launch Point and River Route

The section of the Krutynia kayaking route in Masurian Landscape Park begins in Spychowo. Just beyond the bridge on national road DK59, you can launch a kayak from the left bank of the river. From Spychowo, the Krutynia section follows the Spychowska Struga, passing under two wooden bridges for pedestrians and cyclists, and continues towards Jezioro ZdruĹĽno. The launch point and the bridges are therefore useful landmarks on this stretch of water.

The Krutynia water route also has a canoeing section from Spychowo to Krutyń. The launch point by DK59 and the section towards Krutyń answer different planning questions: Where can you get onto the water, and which destination would you like to choose for your route? This lets you distinguish the access point from the section you want to take when planning your time on the water.

Nature Trail and Cycling Loop

The “Jezioro Ciche” nature trail starts at the Nadleśnictwo Spychowo headquarters on Jezioro Spychowskie. It is accessible to everyone and follows comfortable paths and trails. Facilities include benches and waste bins, as well as the “Eko-Oczko” shelter by Jezioro Ciche, which has a fire pit. There is also a pier, an observation platform and a boardwalk across a bog. If you prefer exploring on foot rather than on the water, the nature trail offers a way to discover the area at your own pace.

For a bike ride, the green Szlak Ostatniego Niedźwiedzia (Last Bear Trail) runs from the cemetery in Spychowo through the village, via Niedźwiedzi Kąt and the “Pupy” nature reserve, and past the “Jezioro Ciche” nature trail before returning to the cemetery. The start and finish are therefore in the same place; along the way, the route passes several named places and landscape features. The cycling loop and the nature trail have different focuses, even though both are connected with “Jezioro Ciche.”

Hike to Historic Fortifications

Nearby, the 4.8 km Szlak Fortyfikacji Szczycieńskiej Pozycji Leśnej (Szczytno Forest Defensive Position Fortifications Trail) starts at the beach in Połom near Spychowo. It leads to historic fortifications dating from 1901 to 1944. The route thus combines a specified distance with a clearly identified historical destination. The Szlak im. Melchiora Wańkowicza also passes through Spychowo and is another hiking route connected with the village.

Church and Muzeum Leśne

Spychowo has a Neo-Gothic church dating from 1903. The Muzeum Leśne (Forest Museum) adds to the village’s cultural and historical attractions: visits are possible after contacting a member of staff at Nadleśnictwo Spychowo in advance. If you plan to visit the museum, take this requirement into account as you prepare.
